Performance of a Link Control Protocol for Local Wireless Multimedia CommunicationsFirst generation wireless systems, which primarily provide analog voice service, are widely in use worldwide. Second generation systems support digital voice/data traffic; some of these systems are already deployed or undergoing deployment. Third generation wireless networks will ultimately carry multimedia traffic that are characterized by combination of different informaion streams of diverse nature (e.g., voice, video, image, data). Some of the salient features of multimedia applications are high speed and changing bit rates (periodic and bursty arrivals), several virtual connections over the same access, synchronization of different information streams, and various service/deliveIy requirements (QoS).
It is clear that next generation wireless networks will be required to interface with much higher bandwidth fiber-based wired networks, possibly carrying B-ISDN/ATM type traffic, which poses interesting management and control issues like admission control, resource sharing and link contol. The objective is to provide *A. Roy is presently with Lucent Technologies India Ltd., Bangalore, India. “seamless wireless communication” to users, irrespective of channel impairments.
Multimedia applications have varying bandwidth requirements. A media access control (MAC) protocol capable of assigning :multiple slots, based on demand and QoS requirements, is thus a natural choice. It is also desired that the protocol supports statistical multiplexing to improve channel utilizalion exploiting bursty nature of the traffic. In this paper, we propose a link control protocol which is a combination of a suitable MAC protocol and a priority based link management and control functionality to support multimedia streams over wireless. When using a desktop computer with a scanner that is designed to emulate keyboard input, the scanner is wedged into the cable that connects the external keyboard to the computer (hence, the term wedge scanner). Since a laptop keyboard is internal, there is no cable accessible to use a standard wedge connection for a scanner.
However, most laptops make provision for an external keyboard via a separate keyboard connector (or port). Since the scanner connections to the laptop are different from the connections to a desktop computer, the scanner must be programmed specifically to operate as an external keyboard device. This is accomplished by using the programming codes on page 9.

Now that Maya is running, you first need to understand what you are seeing. There are a lot of items displayed in the Maya user interface. The best way to begin is to learn the fundamental tools and then learn additional tools as you need them. Begin by learning some of the main tools.
The Maya workspace
The Maya workspace is where you conduct most of your work within Maya. The workspace is the central window where your objects and most editor panels appear. When you start Maya for the first time, the workspace displays by default in a perspective window, or panel. There are the other components of the default perspective view panel:
- The panel is labeled persp at the bottom to indicate that you are viewing the Maya scene from a perspective camera view.
- The panel has its own menu bar at the top left corner of the panel. These menus allow you to access tools and functions related to that specific panel.
- The grid is displayed with two heavy lines intersecting at the center of the Maya scene. This central location is called the origin. The origin is the center of Maya's 3D world, and with all object's directional values measured from this location.

Web 2.0 is a stage of development in which the Web is progressing towards this goal. Most analysts define Web 2.0 in terms of the tools that foster online participation in content creation and social interaction. This tends only to produce lists of new software applications or claims of ‘we are the web’, ‘web 2.0 is people’ etc etc. What I’ve attempted to tease out – following examples from Tim O’Reilly and Danah Boyd – is what lies beneath these tools: what makes them so important or useful? Why are they soaring in popularity?
The conclusion I’ve come to is that their significance lies in their ability to allow the average user to organize online information in such a way that is useful, meaningful and personally relevant. They help people navigate the virtual world and find what they are looking for. They do this by leveraging key characteristics of the Web for a variety of different forms of communication. They can tackle the Web’s inherent problem (unfathomable amounts of information) by capitalizing of its inherent possibilities (collective intelligence, wide variety of types of knowledge, social networks – all the potential benefits of millions of people sharing a virtual space).
How does it help you find information online?
How does it use collective intelligence?
How does it connect you with others?
How does it let you find very specialized information?

It was not designed to be a course textbook, but it may usefully be employed as one. This instructional guide is intended to help.
TAOUP is different from the general run of Unix tutorials, which tend to concentrate on the level of basic shell usage, application programming interfaces and other relatively low-level issues. TAOUP very deliberately focuses at a higher level: design principles, style, and the history that has informed both. It is not a replacement for an introductory UNIX textbook, but a valuable complement to same.
TAOUP could be appropriate in at least three different contexts:
• Courses on the Unix operating system. TAOUP is appropriate as a core text in a course on Unix, especially one oriented toward programmers (as opposed to, say, training system administrators).
• Intermediate-to-advanced courses on software engineering. The problems of complexity control in larger software systems, and the lesson Unix experience teaches about that control, are a core theme of the book.
• Courses on the history of computing. The material is presented in a historical frame, with an emphasis on technology as a human activity. The evolution of Unix makes an interesting lens through which to examine interactions between technology, economics, and subcultural history.

A GLG drawing can be created in the GLG Graphics Builder or programmatically. It may contain predefined GLG components from the GLG Widgets catalog, such as graphs, gauges, meters, or custom graphics created by the user. A GLG Java application can be written as a stand-alone Java program or as an applet. To display GLG graphics, an application creates a GLG bean that can be used either as a top level applet or as a Java bean inside another Java component.
Examples of using the GLG bean in both cases appear later in this tutorial, as well as in the examples directory /examples_java. The GLG Toolkit for Java supports Java1 (AWT-based components), Java2 (Swing-based components) and Java2D.

Coarse focus stopper
The coarse focus stopper marks the stage position at which the specimen is in focus by restricting the movement of the coarse focus knob. (Movement of the stage by the fine focus knob is not restricted.)
Once the coarse focus stopper is clamped in place, the coarse focus knob cannot be used to move the stage any higher. In effect, once the coarse focus knob is clamped in place at the focus position, a rough focus can be attained the next time simply by turning the coarse focus knob as far as it will go. This feature is convenient when viewing similar specimens one after another. If the coarse focus stopper is not being used, the coarse focus stopper ring should be loosened as far as it will go (by turning it as far as it will go in the direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow onFriend or Foe? Web 2.0 in Technical CommunicationThe rise of Web 2.0 technology provides a platform for user-generated content.Publishing is no longer restricted to a few technical writers—any user can now contribute information. But the information coming from users tends to be highly specific, whereas technical documentation is comprehensive but less specific. The two types of information can coexist and improve the overall user experience. User-generated content also offers an opportunity for technical writers to participate as “curators”—by evaluating and organizing the information provided by end users.
Technical writers are accustomed to being the gatekeepers for product information. They carefully organize product documentation, online help, and other user assistance for their readers. Compare this to the chaos of the Web, where content is splattered across blogs, forums, wikis, and the like with little or no organizational scheme.
And yet, readers are turning to the chaos of the Web for information rather than reading the online help. They begin with a Google search and work through the results until they find something relevant.
User-generated content and technical documentation can be complementary rather than competitive. In this white paper, we explore the implications of user-generated content and discuss how technical writers can integrate this content into their overall strategy.
