  • Web 2.0 Re-examined: The Paradigm Shift, Technology Stack and Business Value
  • This essay re-examines web 2.0 by looking at its technology stack and impact on enterprise computing, in contrast to the common consumer-centric point of view. Categorizing the landscape into Consumer Web 2.0 and Enterprise Web 2.0, the essay establishes a web 2.0 technology stack that forms the foundation of a paradigm shift called “architecture of partition”. In the end, the business impact of web 2.0 technologies on enterprises is presented. Web 2.0: the State of Confusion Web 2.0 is exciting, but there are lots of confusions today, even among noted experts. There are two schools of opinions among experts. The first school is critical of Web 2.0. This group is represented by Tim Berners-Lee and Russell Raw. Their opinions are: 1. There is nothing fundamentally different between “Web 1.0” and the so-called “Web 2.0”; 2. Web 2.0 has nothing new and is based on the same technology as of Web 1.0; 3. Web 2.0 is just a piece of jargon. The second group of experts are Web 2.0 champions. This group is represented by Tim O’Reilly, Paul Graham and Dion HinchCliffe. This group argues that: 1. Web 2.0 is here and it is big; 2. “Architecture of Participation”, “the Network Effect (social network)”, and “Harnessing the collective intelligence” are fundamentally new and different from web 1.0; 3. Web 2.0 is more about a paradigm shift in how people use the web, less about new technology. “Web 2.0” is not based on a technology shift, but rather a usage paradigm shift. Despite the confusion, the term “Web 2.0” is getting widely
  • How Web 2.0 technologies move Talent Management
  • For many of today’s companies, a greater volume of work is expected from a limited number of employees. This environment makes it essential for companies to have a strategy in place to nurture and track employee talent. A lack of effective talent management can critically impact business operations and employee productivity. For example, companies without adequate sales and support training programs take longer to bring new products to market; customer retention issues arise from poorly trained support representatives; and employee productivity remains low when workforce talent is not aligned with business processes and goals. Since the 1990s, the process of talent management has been utilized by companies to develop workers’ skills, improve overall performance, and ultimately enhance the corporate bottom line. Today, forward-looking companies have begun to develop talent that is aligned with their business by tapping into online communities—known collectively as Web 2.0 technologies—such as blogs, wikis, and social networks. This paper discusses the morphing of traditional talent management into a more sophisticated, collaborative method of cultivating employee skills using Web 2.0 technologies. Transforming traditional Talent Management Talent management—the acquisition and development of employee talent—has become somewhat of a buzzword due to factors such as globalization and outsourcing to foreign markets. One key aspect of talent management is performance management: how companies develop and rate individual employee performance. Yet talent management equates to far more than performance management. It is an overarching umbrella that encompasses the means by which companies attract, develop, promote, and retain their employees. The components of talent management

  • DRAWING WITH AUTOCAD 2000 - INTRODUCTION
  • This is the first of a series of tutorial introductions to CAD. The overriding aim with these tutorial guides is to give you a firm conceptual understanding of CAD, the scope of techniques available for design and presentation, and strategies for approaching a variety of CAD tasks. In this first tutorial, we will go through the process of starting up AutoCAD on the computer and then look at some of the basic drawing and editing commands. In the next tutorial, we will begin the process of drawing something very simple in order to learn how to attack a drawing task with this system. These tutorials are deliberately verbose, explaining concepts and ideas as you along. It is important, therefore, that you take the time to read and understand those explanations. These tutorials are written for AutoCAD 2000 running under the Windows 95/98 operating environment. Some of the later tutorials make use of enhancement packages that are sold in conjunction with AutoCAD to address specific disciplinary CAD modelling tasks. • WYSIWYG Development of Data Driven Web Applications
  • An emerging trend in Social Networking sites and Web portals is the opening up of their APIs to external application develop- ers. For example, the Facebook Platform, Google Gadgets and Yahoo! Widgets allow developers to design their own applications, which can then can be integrated with the platform and shared with other users. However, current APIs are targeted towards develop- ers with programming expertise and database knowledge; they are not accessible to a large class of users who do not have a programming/database background, but would nevertheless like to create new applications. To address this need, we have developed the AppForge system, which provides a WYSIWYG application development platform. Users can graphically specify the components of webpages inside a Web browser, and the corresponding database schema and application logic will be automatically generated on the fly by the system. The WYSIWYG interface gives instantaneous feedback on what users have created and allows them to run, test and continuously refine their applications. AppForge has been used to create prototype versions of a variety of applications such as an event planning system, a recruiting system, an item trading system and an online course management system. We have also conducted a small and preliminary user study to identify and fix some of the usability aspects of AppForge. As the world moves towards Web 2.0, there is an increasing need to leverage webpages as computing platforms that can enable users to build their own applications. For example, in Facebook and Yahoo! Groups, different groups of users

Content inside this Audi A4 2.0T WE’RE REMINDED THAT all-wheel drive isn’t just for getting up a snowy driveway in wintertime. Testing the new Audi A4 Quattro, we were passing a long line of traffic bottled up behind a truck on a two-lane highway. No worries until we came abreast of an SUV shuffling along immediately behind the 18-wheeler. As we drew alongside, without warning the driver simply yanked his vehicle into the left lane to pass. Accelerating hard, we flicked the Audi far onto the left shoulder, the two right wheels barely remaining on the pavement, and simply drove around the sport-ute, completing the pass without drama. Apart from solid whacks as the left wheels hit deep craters on the dirt shoulder and a shotgun blast of gravel peppering the floorpan, the episode was over in momentsand barely noticeable. That’s the advantage of having all four wheels pulling for you, backed by a world-class Electronic Stability Control system. Even in the hands of an expert driver, a front- or rear-drive… Download Audi A4 Manual
  • AUTO-CODE Laser Tutorial
  • Using the Laser interface, this tutorial will step you through how to run AUTO-CODE in AutoCAD. This tutorial introduces subroutine programming and automatic leaders. The drawing is all set to be used in AUTO-CODE. The part is positioned so that the lower left corner of the drawing is at the zero point. The parts are shifted one-half inch in from the edges of the material. The inside cuts are drawn as closed polylines. The layer for dimensions can be turned off to reduce the clutter. Pick the layer pull down list in AutoCAD and freeze the DIM layer. All other layers should remain visible for this programming exercise. Starting with a 4 and ½ inch square stock material, the parts will be clamped along the top and bottom edges. It is not necessary to show the clamps in AUTO-CODE. It is necessary that you know where they are located relative to the drawing and adding them to the drawing can help clarify the placement of the stock for the machine tool operator if you supply them with a copy of the drawing.
