  • Web 2.0 in and out of the Language Classroom
  • This poster aims to provide the concept of Web 2.0 and its relevant tools in language teaching and learning. An online blog is served as an information kiosk and indicate possible instructional design and applications to language education. By experimenting with the Web 2.0 tool in a participatory community, we are hoping language teachers will learn about appropriate tools ready to be used and further think about the relationship of Web 2.0 and the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and 5 Cs (communication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities) as well as the Wallace’s framework for assessing its effectiveness The purpose of this poster is to investigate Web 2.0 and to understand users’ perspectives of its application in language teaching and learning. As discussed by O'Reilly (2005), an important principle of Web 2.0 is the web as a platform that facilitates the building of web-based communities and the contribution from collective intelligence. Web 2.0 has a multitude of good features (Amol Deshpande & Alejandro Jadad, 2006; O'Reilly, 2005; Skiba, 2006). It: 1) presages a freeing of data, 2) permits the building of virtual applications, 3) is participative, 4) has applications that work for the users, 5) has applications that are modular, 6) is about sharing, 7) is about community and facilitating community, 8) is about remixing, 9) is smart, 10) opens up the Long Tail. Given the fact that Web 2.0 is such a new concept, many language teachers and learners may still not be aware of this revolutionary progress in
  • SVG-Paint: Java Server Faces, Facelets and Web 2.0 for SVG
  • Java Server Faces (JSF) is a MVC (Model View Control) framework for (dynamic) Web-Pages. Facelets is using x-Html pages and Templates to replace JSP (Java Server Pages) for Java Server Faces. It completes the picture and creates a REAL MCV concept (One could use java code within JSP pages). This document tries to explain how JSF with Facelets works, and give a few short directions on how to get it to work. It will also cover how Web 2.0 can be used, and what this means for SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics). All Example-Code within this document is taken from the SVG-Paint Project. SVG-Paint is a web-based painting program based on SVG and Javascript. It features serveral pre-defined forms as rectangular, circle and line, as well as the possibility to draw free-hand. Drawn objects can be changed, deleted and - in the case of the pre-defined forms - moved and zoomed. Paintings can be saved and loaded. To understand how SVG-Paint works, one first has to understand the techniques used for creating it, which will be presented below. Java Server Faces with Facelets MVC The Model View Control concept tries to seperate the code into 3 layers, so each part of it can be changed easily without affecting the others: • Model. Here resides everything that actually does the work - all the functions, and all the data structures. • View. This layer is the one the user can see - it displays the results of the program. • Control. This last layer controls the workflow of the
  • The Forrester Wave: Application Server Platforms
  • Application server platforms are the most important category of application platform software for most enterprises. An application server platform is infrastructure software for building Web and composite applications and, increasingly, applications based on service-oriented architecture (SOA) design principles. An application server platform integrates an application server, which manages user requests, data access, and business logic, with portal servers and integration/business process management (BPM) servers — and often additional features, as well. - App server platforms are the most strategic of all application platforms. According to data from Forrester’s Business Data Services, Microsoft’s .NET and Java/J2EE have consistently finished at the top of the list of most commonly used development platforms. .NET and Java/ J2EE are the core technologies for most application server platforms. Hot new platform options, including Ruby on Rails, Java Spring, and PHP, and new hosted platforms like salesforce.com’s Apex are simply not as important to platform buyers in our surveys yet, and older platforms like 4GLs and host platforms are in declining usage (see Figure 1).· - Application server platforms help customers consolidate to save money. Many customers turn to application server platforms and suites and dump their best-of-breed products. Why? Application server platforms offer higher volume discounts and reduced product integration costs. - App server platforms are the base for a growing number of solutions. Buyers of many packaged business applications either use application server platforms now or soon will, adding to the importance of this category. Microsoft’s Dynamics packaged applications are based on its .NET platform. NetWeaver
  • S510M Color Image Scanner for Macintosh Operator's Guide
  • ScanSnap S510M is a feature-rich, office-ready color image scanner. It is designed to help you improve productivity and solve problems in scanning. The ScanSnap scanner has the following features: ? Converting paper documents into PDFs by pressing a single button! You can turn the documents cluttering up your desk into PDFs, and manage and archive them on your computer. ScanSnap S510M can automatically detect whether the documents are color or black-and-white, so that the size of scanned image files can be made smaller when scanning color and black-and-white documents mixed in a batch. In addition, the scanner can automatically remove blank pages in documents to further reduce the size of files. ? Effortless scanning! Double-sided color documents in A4 or letter size can be scanned at a speed of about 18 sheets/minute (when used with a computer with a PowerPC® G5 processor of 1.6GHz or higher running Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later and with Scan mode Normal, Color mode Auto, and Compression rate 3).(*1) ? Small desktop footprint! Having a footprint smaller than a sheet of A4 or Letter size paper, the ScanSnap scanner can be left on your desk all the time. (*1) - Depending on the document types, the scanning speed may slow down when scanning is performed in "B&W" (Black-and-White) mode (because the data of scanned color documents is converted into monochrome data). For example, when scanning color brochures in "B&W" mode in Normal (Fastest) quality at a compression rate of 3, its scanning speed is about 12 sheets/minute. - When "Allow automatic blank page removal" or
  • Getting Started with Microsoft Access 2000
  • Microsoft Access is a powerful data-management tool that allows you to input, store, and report data in an attractive and efficient way. Although Access has templates and “wizards” to help you easily set up a database that can suit simple purposes, it can also run extremely advanced functions. This handout is intended to introduce new users to the basic functions of Access. What is a database? Before we start on the construction of a practice database, we should review the basic concepts of database design. It is important to thoroughly plan your database before you begin its construction to guarantee that your database will work correctly. Concepts and Terms Access allows you to create a database of information in which data values are stored in fields. A collection of fields makes a record, and a group of records makes a table. - A database is a collection of related data that is stored in one or more tables. - A table is a collection of related information stored in rows and columns. The power of Access is that it allows you to link data together even if it resides in separate tables. - A field is a column of a table that contains a category of information. - A record is all of the fields for one particular object – such as a person’s last name, first name, and telephone number would comprise a record. - A data value is the smallest unit of information. A key to success with Access is to store data in the smallest

  • The best way to protect the fetus is to protect the mother. When a safety belt is worn properly, it’s more likely that the fetus won’t be hurt in a crash. For pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making safety belts effective is wearing them properly. Right Front Passenger Position The right front passenger’s safety belt works the same way as the driver’s safety belt. See “Driver Position” earlier in this section. Air Bag System This part explains the air bag system. Your vehicle has air bags — one air bag for the driver and another air bag for the right front passenger. Frontal air bags are designed to help reduce the risk of injury from the force of an inflating air bag. But these air bags must inflate very quickly to do their job and comply with federal regulations. Here are the most important things to know about the air bag system..
