The installed version of AutoCAD is AutoCAD Map v3 which is AutoCAD release 14 with added spatial (or GIS) functionality. It can be started by doing Start PWF Programs and Information Graphics and Presentation AutoCAD Map
Please note that AutoCAD can be made to do things by choosing tools or tasks from the menus, or issuing commands on the AutoCAD commandline. This document will use the command line wherever possible because the menus may change between versions of AutoCAD. In addition, clones of AutoCAD will look and feel different, but often implement the same commands.

This tutorial outlines the process of preparing a 2D digital file for tool-pathing with FlowPATH for use with the school’s abrasive water-jet cutter. The water-jet is only capable of 2D cutting operations, and has extremely limited control of the depth of the cut so work should be designed with 2D lines and with the intention that the lines will be cut completely through the material – not etched. Depending on the hardness of the material it is possible to etch or score a cut instead of cutting all the way through, but this should only be done with ductile materials as it will cause shattering or breaking in more brittle materials.

This tutorial is intended to guide you through the process of exporting ArcView Shapefiles for use as vector files in AutoCAD.
1. Create a map in ArcMAP.
2. Click on the red ArcMAP toolbox in the toolbar at the top of the screen. This will open a window between the Table of Contents and the Map section of your screen.
3. Select Conversion Tools > To CAD > Export to CAD.
4. After selecting the Export to CAD feature, a dialog box will appear allowing you to select the features (shapefiles) that you would like to export by CAD. Select the layers you would like to export by selecting the layer name from the dropdown list that appears under Input Features.
5. Once your layers have been selected, select a destination file name and location.

There are now two laser cutters available to you; the V-460 has a bed size of 18”x24” and the X-660 which has a bed size of 18”x32”. The laser cutters can do many things, like cut and engrave (or score). There are some tips for preparing your laser files in AutoCAD at the end of this document. For more information on approved materials the laser cutters can cut and score please refer to the “Laser Resources – Materials and Suppliers” document.
