  • Statistical analysis using Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Excel spreadsheets have become somewhat of a standard for data storage, at least for smaller data sets. This, along with the program often being packaged with new computers, naturally encourages its use for statistical analyses. This is unfortunate, since Excel is most decidedly not a statistical package. Now, here are the values obtained when using the regression program available in the Analysis Toolpak of Microsoft Excel 2002 (the same results came from earlier versions of Excel; I will say something about Excel 2003 later). Each of the nine numbers given above is incorrect! The slope estimate has the wrong sign, the estimated standard errors of the coefficients are zero (making it impossible to construct t–statistics), and the values of R2, F and the regression sum of squares are negative! It’s obvious here that the output is garbage (even Excel seems to know this, as the #NUM!’s seem to imply), but what if the numbers that had come out weren’t absurd — just wrong? Unless Excel does better at addressing these computational problems, it cannot be considered a serious candidate for use in statistical analysis. • Database Management Systems (DBMS) SQL and MySQL
  • SQL - Structured Query Language Structured Query Language, is a computer language designed for retrieval and management of data in relational database management systems database schema creation and modification database object access control management. History: The first version of SQL was developed at IBM by Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymond F. Boyce in the early 1970s. Standardized in 1986 by ANSI. Subsequent versions of the SQL standard have been released as ISO standards Latest SQL Standards SQL:2003: Introduced XML-related features, window functions, standardized sequences, and columns with auto-generated values (including identity-columns). SQL:2006: ISO/IEC 9075-14:2006 defines ways in which SQL can be used in conjunction with XML. It defines ways of importing and storing XML data in an SQL database, manipulating it within the database and publishing both XML and conventional SQL-data in XML form. It provides facilities that permit applications to integrate into their SQL code the use of XQuery, the XML Query Language published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), to concurrently access ordinary SQL-data and XML documents. Why MySQL? Open source databases are showing the highest growth rate in the database market, according to a new study by analyst firm Gartner. MySQL is a key part of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP / Perl / Python), a fast growing open source enterprise software stack. MySQL runs on more than 20 platforms including Linux, Windows, OS/X, HP-UX, AIX, Netware. More and more companies are using LAMP as an alternative to expensive proprietary software stacks because of its lower cost and freedom from lock-in. Implies Job Opportunities. • Semantic Web Use Cases and Case Studies
  • Presenting compelling search results depends critically on understanding what is there to be presented on the first place. Given that the current generation of search engines have a very limited understanding of the query entered by the user, the content returned as a result and the relationship of the two, the opportunities for customizing search results have been limited. Opening up search The majority of Web pages today are generated from databases, and Web site owners increasingly are providing APIs to this data or embedding information inside their HTML pages with microformats, eRDF, or RDFa. In other cases, structured data can be extracted with relative ease from Web pages that follow atemplate using XSLT stylesheets. SearchMonkey reuses structured data to improve search result display with benefits to both search users, developers, and publishers of web content. The first type of applications are focusing on remaking the abstracts on the search result page: Figure 1 shows the kind of presentations that structured data enables in this space. Based on data, the image representing the object can be easily singled out. One can also easily select the most important attributes of the object to be shown in a table format. Similarly for links: the data tells which links represent important actions the user can take (e.g. play the video, buy the product) and these links can be arranged in a way that their function is clear. In essence, knowledge of the data and its semantics enables to present the page in a much more

  • DOSCH DESIGN TUTORIAL Using HDRIs in 3ds max A Step-by-Step Guide
  • This tutorial show you how to use HDRIs in 3ds max by using Vray or Brazil r/s. Things you will need for this tutorial. 3D Studio Max 4.xx or above Vray or Brazil r/s HDRI files from one of the Dosch Design HDRI collections the scene files delivered with this tutorial About HDRI There are two types of images. Low Dynamic Range Image(LDRI) and High Dynamic Range Image(HDRI). The first one comprises “normal” bitmaps [like JPEG, TIFF, BMP…], bitmaps which have 8 bits per pixel, with values between 0-255 [in RGB mode]. Which means that there are only 256 levels of luminosity, which doesn’t cover by far the range that can be captured by a real camera, with different levels of exposure. On the other end we find HDRI, whose values can get a lot higher then 256. The main feature is that the value of each pixel is proportional with the quantity of light on each pixel. Basically, instead of just storing colors on the screen like normal bitmaps do, the HDR format stores the quantity of light per pixel. Meaning we can have more then 256 levels of luminosity. • The Bugzilla Guide ? 2.16.3 Release
  • Bugzilla is a bug? or issue?tracking system. Bug?tracking systems allow individual or groups of developers effectively to keep track of outstanding problems with their product. Bugzilla was originally written by Terry Weissman in a programming language called TCL, to replace a rudimentary bug?tracking database used internally by Netscape Communications. Terry later ported Bugzilla to Perl from TCL, and in Perl it remains to this day. Most commercial defect?tracking software vendors at the time charged enormous licensing fees, and Bugzilla quickly became a favorite of the open?source crowd (with its genesis in the open?source browser project, Mozilla). It is now the de?facto standard defect?tracking system against which all others are measured. Bugzilla boasts many advanced features. These include: • Powerful searching • User?configurable email notifications of bug changes • Full change history • Inter?bug dependency tracking and graphing • Excellent attachment management • Integrated, product?based, granular security schema • Fully security?audited, and runs under Perl's taint mode • A robust, stable RDBMS back?end • Web, XML, email and console interfaces • Completely customisable and/or localisable web user interface • Extensive configurability • Smooth upgrade pathway between versions Why Should We Use Bugzilla? For many years, defect?tracking software has remained principally the domain of large software development houses. Even then, most shops never bothered with bug?tracking software, and instead simply relied on shared lists and email to monitor the status of defects. This procedure is error?prone and tends to cause those bugs judged least significant by developers to be dropped or ignored. These days, many companies are finding that integrated defect?tracking systems reduce downtime, increase productivity, and raise
  • Create dynamic sites with PHP & MySQL
  • This tutorial shows you how to use two open source, cross-platform tools for creating a dynamic Web site: PHP and MySQL. When we are finished, you will know how dynamic sites work and how they serve the content, and you will be ready to serve your own dynamic content from your site. The need for dynamic content The Web is no longer static; it's dynamic. As the information content of the Web grows, so does the need to make Web sites more dynamic. Think of an e-shop that has 1,000 products. The owner has to create 1,000 Web pages (one for each product), and whenever anything changes, the owner has to change all those pages. Ouch!!! Wouldn't it be easier to have only one page that created and served the content on the fly from the information about the products stored in a database, depending on the client request? Nowadays sites have to change constantly and provide up-to-date news, information, stock prices, and customized pages. PHP and SQL are two ways to make your site dynamic. PHP PHP is a robust, server-side, open source scripting language that is extremely flexible and actually fun to learn. PHP is also cross platform, which means your PHP scripts will run on Unix, Linux, or an NT server. MySQL SQL is the standard query language for interacting with databases. MySQL is an open source, SQL database server that is more or less free and extremely fast. MySQL is also cross platform. Download pdf Create dynamic sites with PHP & MySQL
