Although traditional firewalls have effectively prevented network-level attacks, most future attacks will be at the application level, where current security mechanisms are woefully inadequate. Application-level security vulnerabilities are inherent in a Web application’s code, regardless of the technology in which the application is implemented or the security of the Web server and backend database on which it is built. A recent advisory published by Internet Security Systems (see the “Internet Resources” sidebar, p. 44) claims that 11 widely deployed shopping cart applications are vulnerable to a simple attack that lets hackers pur- chase goods for much less than their listed price. Worryingly, the attack does not require particular technical skill; it suffices to save the shopping cart’s HTML confirmation form to disk, use a text editor to modify the price of the goods (stored in a hidden form field), and load the HTML form back into the browser.

Writing on the Web (2.0)?

In most scientific disciplines, the majority of academic papers are written collaboratively. They also tend to undergo several rounds of revision, with new content often being added after peer review and style and format reworked for target journals. Currently, this tends to involve emailing versions of the document between authors, or storing versions on shared drives. However, a new breed of online applications that mimic the functions of desktop applications could change the process of producing a scientific paper.

Most of the current methodologies for building ontologies rely on specialized knowledge engineers. This is in contrast to real-world settings, where the need for maintenance of domain specific ontologies emerges in the daily work of users. But in order to allow for participatory ontology engineering, we need to have a more realistic conceptual model of how ontologies develop in the real world. We introduce the ontology maturing processes which is based on the insight that ontology engineering is a collaborative informal learning process and for which we analyze characteristic evolution steps and triggers that have users engage in ontology engineering within their everyday work processes.

Today you can buy dozens and dozens of books about learning objects (LO). The subject seems to be mature enough to be used widely in learning and teaching practice. But after the initial hype less than ten years ago, things have not gone as smoothly as expected. Why? Predictions were promising: LO repositories will create a market for learning content, this will reduce costs for instructional design, shorten the development time for e-learning courses, different instructors will be able to use the same materials.
