  • How a neural net grows symbols
  • Brains, unlike artificial neural nets, use sym- bols to summarise and reason about perceptual input. But unlike symbolic AI, they “ground” the symbols in the data: the symbols have meaning in terms of data, not just meaning imposed by the outside user. If neural nets could be made to grow their own symbols in the way that brains do, there would be a good prospect of combining neural networks and symbolic AI, in such a way as to combine the good features of each. It is argued that the secret of growing symbols in neural nets lies in cluster analysis. Algorithms for clustering, many of them naturally implementable in neural hardware, would produce clusters, which are discrete entities summarising data that have all the properties of symbols. The war between symbolic artificial intelligence and its neural net rival continues because each has strengths that the other lacks, and it has proved impossible to combine them successfully. It is agreed that symbolic systems work well on discretely structured problems, like chess, and give a transparent understanding of what they are doing, which allows their use in new situations through adding and deleting rules. But it is difficult to make them adaptive to data, especially in situations where there is only data to go on, and almost no understanding via rules, such as face recognition. Scaling up from toy to real problems is also hard. Neural nets, on the other hand, are strong where symbolic AI is weak, and vice versa. They adapt easily

  • In this guide we have designed a user-friendly step-by-step instructional format that will assist you in making your computer network ready. We have utilized diagrams and screen simulations to make the installation process as easy as possible. However, if after following these directions you continue to encounter difficulty in connecting to the network please call the University Help Desk. These instructions only apply to newer Macintoshes which are running OS X. “X” is just the Roman numeral ten, “OS X” is pronounced “OS Ten.” These instructions are for all versions of OS 10.0 and above. If you are running an operating system prior to OS X and require assistance please call the University Help Desk. ACTIVATING YOUR NETWORK CONNECTION ON CAMPUS To use the network you will need an Ethernet connection cable, an Internet browser (Internet Explorer comes preinstalled with OS X). MAC SETUP To make your computer network ready please follow the instructions below. 1) Go to the Apple menu and launch “System Preferences...” as shown below: Note: The Apple Menu stays the same no matter what program you’re using. 2) Click NETWORK from the “Internet & Network” list. 3) Select “Built-in-Ethernet” from the Show pull down list (see illustration below). 4) Select “Using DHCP server” from the Configure pull-down list. • A Practical Guide to Using Computers in Language Teaching
  • Computers—the most powerful dimension of the second or foreign language learning experience since the advent of the teacher—serve as tireless portals to limitless target language models and, more important for the classroom, as tools for activities that draw students together to cooperate on activities that interest them and stimulate their creative language production and comprehension, all while challenging them to overcome obstacles in a complex environment in the target language. In the computer-assisted language learning (CALL) classroom, students don’t study language as much as use it to cooperate and solve problems not unique to the language classroom. If we recognize the value in the process more than product, then we can appreciate that when a CALL class activity gets messy, and it does, it’s realistic: It reflects real language use and life in general with unforeseen problems and the need for creative solutions using a tool central to modern life. What are the greatest obstacles to realizing this learning potential of the CALL classroom? 1. Users not appreciating these challenges in the process as being valuable to language use and therefore learning. These challenges may take many forms for students: • following verbal and written instruction • needing to gain comprehension in one step in order to get to the next • consulting each other for clarification • helping struggling neighbors with secondary instruction • translating concepts (activity ideas) into action (specific procedures) • working through challenges and problems with language and procedures • being immersed in the target language on screen, content, and interface 2. Teachers not being adequately oriented
  • AccuRender Tutorial: Adjusting Exposure
  • An important thing to keep in mind is that light intensity can vary significantly within a model. Just like in real-life, if daylight is coming through a window and you look toward it, your eyes compensate for it and adjust. If there are lights on within the room, they can become add less to the overall room brightness if the light coming through the window is too bright. This complex, sometimes subtle, change is taken into account by adjusting the Exposure like an automatic camera. These adjustments take into account over- and under-exposure due to contrasting light intensities. These two images have the same lighting intensities in the model, but the sunlight coming into the room can be seen hitting the floor crisply only in the first rendering. This is because of the exposure adjustment, which compensates for the brighter spots by “stopping down” the camera lens. Download PDF for AccuRender Tutorial: Adjusting Exposure

  • Protecting Individual Privacy in the Web 2.0 Era
  • “The right to privacy” was the title of a scholarly article in the Harvard Law Review of 1890 (written by Samuel Warren and Louis Brandeis), which proclaimed such a right in view of the rapid expansion of print media that sometimes published pictures of private individuals. More than a hundred years later, anyone of us in this room can take pictures with a mobile phone or digital camera and put them into the World Wide Web. When we speak of the “Web 2.0”, we have in mind this kind of communications network which allows everyone to publish and share text, sound and images. Chat rooms, Blogs, Wikis, open collaborative networks and the like are on the rise and lead to marvellous international contacts and co-operation at individual level. So far, media content has been produced by journalists and media staff with editorial responsibility and ethical codes of conduct. But what are the standards for the common users of the Internet, whether young or old, educated or not, wherever they live in this world, and World Wide Web? Do we want to limit this new and seemingly endless freedom in cyberspace? The World Wide Web is often characterised as a wonderful space which is open to everyone and creates its own new rules. Such glorifications are probably naïve, because the technology may be extremely good, but we human beings using this technology are still the same I cannot attempt to provide answers to all questions concerning privacy on the Web 2.0, but I draw attention
  • XBMC-Python Scripting Tutorial
  • Welcome to the Python for XBMC Tutorial! This project began one day when I discovered XBMC (XBox Media Center) supports scripts written in Python. Darkie made the port, and I’d like to thank him for his great work and support! (I harassed him with questions and feature suggestions and he was always nice enough to reply to the questions and to add the features.) Curious, I decided to try to use this scripting language to display some basic stuff. Before I could begin writing for the XBox, I spent many hours learning the Python language (and, in the process, the snake bit me ;), and reading through all the documentation included in the Windows port. Once I’d finished that, I started to code some very basic scripts. I learned XBMC Python through a lot of trial and error. Now I feel more comfortable coding for the XBox, and so I decided to share my experience. In order to script for the XBox, you’ll obviously need Python installed with XBMC. Most XBMC releases include a python.rar file containing the necessary scripts. (Some full-scale releases come with Python already included in the main installation.) So unrar the Python file if you need to, and you'll have two folders: “python” and “scripts.” Place both of these in XBMC’s root directory. Note that features are always being added, so we really advise you to have the last version of XBMC and of Python, otherwise scripts written using newer versions may not work with your installation. To run
