  • Securing Web 2.0 for K-12 & Higher Education
  • Why Educators May Be Tempted to Say No to Web 2.0 In the face of the rapid changes on the Internet and the increased risks they bring, many schools, especially in the K-12 grades, have taken polar approaches to managing Web 2.0 within their schools. Some have opened the doors to these new opportunities, believing that their students and faculty should embrace these innovative applications in an effort to expand learning through online collaboration and sharing, while others have been quick to shut the door due to the potential costs and risks they may pose to younger students. In K-12 grades, the consensus seems to be to block these sites in order to protect students and their privacy from child predators and the potentially objectionable content that these real-time, dynamic sites may host. Universities and research organizations appear more open to embracing Web 2.0 technology in hopes of providing an academic environment that fosters learning through collaboration. But in so doing, they are encountering challenges. For example, universities have to balance the ability to provide open access with the need to control rising bandwidth costs and ensure network performance. While bandwidth has become less expensive in most parts of the world, new rich content, video, streaming media, and large downloads can quickly bog down even the most robust university networks. In addition, due to growing compliance concerns, higher education is challenged to provide the right level of security against the very real threats of data loss for students, employees, and even student
  • Dell D-Family Battery Charger User’s Guide Manual
  • Handling the cord on this product, or cords associated with accessories sold with this product, will expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash your hands after handling the cord. Safety: When Using Your Battery Charger Observe the following safe-handling guidelines to prevent damage to your battery charger: • When setting up the battery charger, place it on a level surface. • Protect your battery charger from environmental hazards such as dirt, dust, food, liquids, temperature extremes, and overexposure to sunlight. • When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its strain-relief loop, not on the cable itself. As you pull out the connector, keep it evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable make sure both connectors are correctly oriented and aligned. Safety: Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge Static electricity can harm electronic components inside your battery charger. To prevent static damage, discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of your battery charger’s electronic components such as connectors. You can do so by touching any unpainted metal surface. Battery Disposal Your battery charger is for Dell D-Family lithium-ion batteries for use with a Dell portable computer. Do not dispose of lithium-ion batteries along with household waste. Contact your local waste disposal agency for the address of the nearest battery deposit site. • Access Your openSUSE Desktop from Anywhere Using FreeNX PDF
  • How to install and use FreeNX in openSUSE 10.2 FreeNX is the free version of NoMachine’s NX Server, which makes fast, secure, remote X11 connections to enable users to access remote Linux and Unix desktop sessions over a data link such as LAN or Internet. The server has been developed in such way that it’s fast enough even over a low bandwidth and high latency connection such as a dial-up link. This is one of the main reasons I will choose FreeNX over a common VNC program. FreeNX can be also set up as a proxy, so it will tunnel Remote Desktop Protocols and remote Virtual Network Computing sessions, giving them some of the same speed improvements. FreeNX uses high optimized techniques to compress the X11 data, minimizing the amount of data that needs to be transferred, providing a responsive and real-time remote desktop experience. • Using Attributed Variables in the Implementation of Concurrent and Parallel Logic Programming Systems
  • Incorporating the possibility of attaching attributes to variables in a logic programming system has been shown to allow the addition of general constraint solving capabilities to it. This approach is very attractive in that by adding a few primi- tives any logic programming system can be turned into a generic constraint logic programming system in which constraint solving can be user defined, and at source level-an extreme example of the “glass box” approach. In this paper we propose a different and novel use for the concept of attributed variables: developing a generic parallel/concurrent (constraint) logic programming system, using the same “glass box” favor. We argue that a system which implements attributed variables and a few additional primitives can be easily customized at source level to implement many of the languages and execution models of parallelism and concurrency currently proposed, in both shared memory and distributed systems. We illustrate this through examples and report on an implementation of our ideas. • AJAX Design Strategies
  • Web applications have entered a new era driven by web site goals such as fast response to user actions and user collaboration in creating and sharing web site content. The popular term attributed to these highly responsive and often collaborative sites is Web 2.0. Some prime examples of Web 2.0 are web sites such as Google Maps and Flickr. Google Maps offers a highly responsive user interface (UI). For instance, you can view a map, then move your cursor across it to see adjacent areas almost immediately. Flickr is a site on which users store and share photographs -- users manage almost all the site's content. Other Web 2.0 sites provide a similarly rich user experience by doing things such as integrating services from other web sites or incorporating a steady stream of new information. For example, the Google map service can be brought into another web site, such as a site for purchasing cars, to present a map that highlights the location of auto dealerships that sell a particular car model. The term used for these site integrations is "mashups." Or a sports-oriented site can continually update scores without requiring the user to request a page update. What is AJAX? A number of excellent articles that describe AJAX are available, for example, Asynchronous JavaScript Technology and XML (AJAX) With Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition. In brief, AJAX is a set of technologies that together allows a web site to be -- or appear to be -- highly responsive. AJAX enables this because
