XDoclet simplifies continuous integration between components using attribute-oriented programming. It allows you to radically reduce development time by generating deployment descriptors and support code, allowing you to focus on application logic code. If you are a J2EE development veteran, then you realize keeping code in sync with deployment descriptors can be a drag. Often you may need to reuse components with other applications or in other environments like other application servers or with other database systems. You need to keep separate deployment descriptor for each application/environment combination, even if only one or two lines of the large deployment descriptor changes, you need to have a deployment descriptor for every possible configuration.
This can really slow down development. At times you may feel you spend more time syncing deployment descriptors than writing code. XDoclet facilitates automated deployment descriptor generation. As a code generation utility, it allows you to tack on metadata to language features like classes, method, and fields using what looks like JavaDoc tags. Then it uses that extra metadata to generate related files like deployment descriptor and source code. This concept has been coined attribute-oriented programming (not to be confused with aspect-oriented programming, the other “AOP”). XDoclet generates these related files by parsing your source files similar to the way the JavaDoc engine parses your source to create JavaDoc documentation. Web 2.0 enables social networking on the Web by allowing users to contribute content, share it, rate it, create a network of friends, and decide what they like to see and how they want it to look like.
In this panel, we propose to explore what Web 2.0 has to do with databases. Among the questions we will ask are: Are we going to be building new kinds of databases with Web 2.0? What does it mean when 1 million people are building a database as a collaborative effort? What is a new notion of schemas and queries that we need to develop for such scenarios? The main point of controversy is that while some people think that Web 2.0 requires a new data management infrastructure, others view it as a great opportunity to integrate many ”small” distributed databases which store users and content. We finish the panel by asking the question: Are there databases we can build now that could not be built earlier because we have mass collaboration?

DownloadThe First Appearance of Web 2.0It is hard to pinpoint the moment of Web 2.0’s emergence – because there was not one. The was no release of a single new technology. There was no single economic insight or business model that completely disrupted existing markets. There was no industry consortium that defined a new standard. If forced to pick a moment, perhaps Google’s IPO will serve historically as the marker – in the same way that Netscape’s IPO’s is often used to signify the birth of the dot com era. At any rate, at some point over the past 12 to 18 months several factors have aligned and a there is now recognition that the companies and web services that are moving the internet market today share many common characteristics.
Formally, “Web 2.0” as a label was first used by Tim O’Reilly and Dale Dougherty of O’Reilly Publishing. The story goes that the two were brainstorming about the shared characteristics of today’s successful internet companies compared with the characteristics of the pre-dotcom bubble companies of 2000. Their brainstorming led to the birth of a conference – Web 2.0 (http://www.web2con.com/web2con/), which was held in October of 2004. The evolution of internet focused companies and services in the 13 months since that conference have helped to reinforce – and extend - their observations.

Ultimately, Web 2.0 is an industry buzzword. Like any buzzword, it’s usefulness can be debated because they are easily mis-used and misunderstood.
