  • A Globus Primer
  • Everything You Wanted to Know about Globus, but Were Afraid To Ask Describing Globus Toolkit Version 4 An Early and Incomplete Draft Please send comments, criticisms, and suggestions to: foster@mcs.anl.gov Preface The Globus Toolkit (GT) has been developed since the late 1990s to support the development of service-oriented distributed computing applications and infrastructures. Core GT components address basic issues relating to security, resource access and management, data movement and management, resource discovery, and so forth. A broader “Globus universe” comprises numerous tools and components that build on core GT4 functionality to provide many useful application- level functions. These tools have been used to develop many Grid systems and applications. Version 4 of the Globus Toolkit, GT4, released in April 2005, represents a significant advance relative to the GT3 implementation of Web services functionality in terms of the range of components provided, functionality, standards conformance, usability, and quality of documentation. This document is intended to provide a first introduction to key features of both GT4 and associated tools, and the ways in which these components can be used to develop Grid infrastructures and applications. Its focus is on the user’s view of the technology and its application, and the practical techniques that should be employed to develop GT4-based applications. We discuss in turn the applications that motivate the development of GT4 and related tools; the four tasks involved in building Grids: design, deployment, application, operations; GT4 structure, including its Web services (WS) and pre-WS components; the Globus universe and its various

  • The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine PDF
  • We present Google, a prototype of a large-scale search engine which makes heavy use of the structure present in hypertext. Google is designed to crawl and index the Web efficiently and produce much more satisfying search results than existing systems. The prototype with a full text and hyperlink database of at least 24 million pages is available at http://google.stanford.edu/ To engineer a search engine is a challenging task. Search engines index tens to hundreds of millions of web pages involving a comparable number of distinct terms. They answer tens of millions of queries every day. Despite the importance of large-scale search engines on the web, very little academic research has been done on them. Furthermore, due to rapid advance in technology and web proliferation, creating a web search engine today is very different from three years ago. This paper provides an in-depth description of our large-scale web search engine — the first such detailed public description we know of to date. Apart from the problems of scaling traditional search techniques to data of this magnitude, there are new technical challenges involved with using the additional information present in hypertext to produ e better search results. This paper addresses this question of how to build a practical large-scale system which can exploit the additional information present in hypertext. Also we look at the problem of how to effectively deal with uncontrolled hypertext collections where anyone can publish anything they want. • FORD FALCON XR8 manual Road Test Report
  • After spending quite a few years in the shadows of Holden and its popular range of Commodore family cars, Ford has struck back with an exciting new range of locally produced Falcon models. The BA model Falcon represents an investment by Ford in the order of $500 million. The new models offer comprehensive styling, powertrain, suspension, interior and safety related changes, and look set to challenge Holden for sales supremacy in the family car class. The styling of the new Falcon is a big improvement over the superseded AU series; however, perhaps the most significant upgrade has taken place beneath the skin of the Falcon. Ford has introduced a range of new engine options in the Falcon that includes a 4.0 litre double overhead camshaft (DOHC) six cylinder engine, a turbocharged version of the six and a new 5.4 litre V8 engine. The new engines deliver significantly more power and torque, and thereby offering improved performance across the board for all models in the Falcon range. The new 5.4 litre V8 engine comes from Ford’s Windsor plant in Canada and is available in a number of different configurations. The standard V8 engine is called the Barra 220. It is a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) engine with three valves per cylinder that develops 220 kW of power and 470 Nm of torque. The engine that powers the XR8 evaluated for this report is a more potent DOHC unit that features four valves per cylinder. Designated the Boss 260, this engine produces a very
  • Defeating Compiler-level Buffer Overflow Protection
  • BUFFER OVERFLOW ATTACK SARE THE most popular method intruders use to gain remote and privileged access to computer systems. Programs that fail to use appropriate bounds checking can allow an attacker to write data beyond the intended boundaries of a buffer and thus possibly corrupt control structures in the program. This enables an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the same privilege as the victim process. An attacker’s preference is usually to overwrite the saved instruction pointer that is pushed onto the stack before a function call or to overwrite a function pointer that will be used later in the program. It is also possible to use these attacks simply to overwrite other data. This kind of attack is harder to prevent but, fortunately, is less common than the previous type and is not discussed here. Buffer overflows first gained attention with the release of the famed Morris worm which exploited a buffer overflow in fingerd [1]. Despite the attack used in the Morris worm, buffer overflows did not become popular until the release of two papers that detailed the discovery and exploitation of these vulnerabilities [2,3]. This paper discusses vulnerabilities in two compiler-level protection mechanisms, StackGuard and Point-Guard. While this paper takes a critical look at both of these solutions, it does not intend to make them seem insignificant. The attacks described in this paper help to show how StackGuard and PointGuard should be complemented to construct a more complete protection system.
