Is e-Teaching Web Zero or Potentially Web 2.1?The current pedagogical trend about involving students in their learning is naturally extended to student-centered learning in e-Learning systems. Likewise, instructional designs are developed to enable and motivate students at center stage to learn effectively and willingly. However, from our ten years of experience in promoting an e-Learning system called TIES in higher education, we have realized that an “e-Teaching” environment for teachers to teach effectively and happily needs to be founded as a prerequisite to successful e-Learning.
We further argue that “e-Teaching” can be developed to be a central idea that is actually more important than e-Learning. The reasons are as follows: (1) teaching is more fun and active than learning, (2) teaching requires more creative and imaginative brain work than learning, (3) teaching creates more value than learning, and (4) the Web is growing as a global brain harnessing intellectual knowledge. A seemingly innocuous shift of the center of attention from students to teachers may transform e-Teaching as a current Web 0 status to even Web 2.1, if we may borrow a trendy word from a recent Web 2.0 hype.
Increasingly, e-Leaning today is defined by terms like Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the context of ubiquitous IT network society. However, the bottom line of e-Learning is defined as training delivered on a PC/Internet to improve students' learning performance and their self-motivation and self-directedness. Instructional designs are also aimed at supporting students to learn effectively in an e-Learning environment.

In many ways Ruby strikes the same chord in me that Perl did a decade or more ago. I show Ruby from a Perl perspective. When I first encountered Perl, I found the language to be a little strange coming from a C background. From time to time I would use Perl to write things I would have written in C or shell, and soon Perl was my tool of choice for many tasks. Ruby is having a similar effect on me. Sometimes I prototype Perl code in Ruby, sometimes I just use Ruby for the sake of seeing if I arrive at a different solution using a di?erent language.
Like Perl, Ruby makes programming fun, but in a different way. Ruby borrows features from many languages, and one of those is Perl. I can simply translate Perl code into Ruby if I want. I will use the Soundex function as an example, as the algorithm is simple and my Perl implementation will reveal something about my abilities as a programmer. The Soundex algorithm is a simple hashing of the letters of a word to a four character code which brings similar sounding words to the same code. In 1994 I posted a routine, shown in code listing 1, to comp.lang.perl which shows both the simplicity of the Soundex algorithm and my Perl style at its worst (or best).

One key process by which to accomplish this in Social Space, is the wedding of folksonomy (of the people) with ontology (of the machine). Such a wedding must necessarily be conducted in the shared physicality of the word, of language. In this respect, WordNet together with OWL, play the role of matchmaker. But the same Social Space also provides an opportunity for natural folksonomical tagging by digiFoto (key)image.
The research harness for experimental keyimage tagging consists of Flickr as the main (digiFoto image) Social Space testbed and De.licio.us as the auxillary outreach secondary Social Space. Protégé Editor with OWL-DL provides the support for the bridge from keyimage to the formal ontology. The primary end user application domain is the keyimage tagging of paintings in an online art gallery.

For users, it is often characterized by much greater interactivity, with users able to influence what is presented to them. Often the content changes or updates frequently, such as in games, flight trackers, stock tickers, etc. In many ways there is a more desktop-like experience, in which Web applications converge with the features of ordinary applications. This is an emergent aspect of the combination of existing technologies supported by the open nature of the architecture of the Web.
Although Web 2.0 applications behave increasingly like desktop applications, they continue to use Web technologies for content transmission, encoding, and presentation. These technologies are used or combined in novel ways that lack the accessibility features that have been built over years into their platform-specific counterparts and are just becoming effectively mainstream in “Web 1.0” content. Each node in an overlay network maintains connections with a number of peers, forming a graph upon which a distributed application or service is implemented. In an “Eclipse” attack, a set of malicious, colluding overlay nodes arranges for a correct node to peer only with members of the coalition. If successful, the attacker can mediate most or all communication to and from the victim. Furthermore, by supplying biased neighbor information during normal overlay maintenance, a modest number of malicious nodes can eclipse a large number of correct victim nodes.
This paper studies the impact of Eclipse attacks on structured overlays and shows the limitations of known defenses. We then present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a new defense, in which nodes anonymously audit each other’s connectivity. The key observation is that a node that mounts an Eclipse attack must have a higher than average node degree. We show that enforcing a node degree limit by auditing is an effective defense against Eclipse attacks. Furthermore, unlike most existing defenses, our defense leaves flexibility in the selection of neighboring nodes, thus permitting important overlay optimizations like proximity neighbor selection (PNS).
