The reason for Java being used by these latter communities is that it has something to offer over and above the languages currently in use – chiefly Fortran, Visual Basic and C/C++.
Specifically, object-oriented programming, increased security both within a program and between programs, parallelism facilities, applets and access to new resources through class libraries are cited as features which could be profitably used by scientific programmers [19].
The move towards Java in distributed computing has not been without its problems [17, 15], however, and it is to be expected that programmers will be loathe to embark upon another change of language so soon. Yet, the advent of Microsoft’s new language C# cannot go unnoticed, and the questions to be asked are:
• What are the additional advantages of C# as a language over Java?
• Can the new and interesting features of C# be incorporated into existing Java software?
Like Java, C# is not just a programming language, but co-exists with a particular runtime enironment (like Java’s JVM), a means of communicating on the network (like Java’s RMI but unlike Java’s applets) and several independent technologies which are used by both languages (such as XML)

The CLR assigns each thread its own memory stack so that local variables are kept separate. In the next example, we define a method with a local variable, then call the method simultaneously on the main thread and a newly created thread:
A separate copy of the cycles variable is created on each thread's memory stack, and so the output is, predictably, ten question marks.

1. Capture a DV tape
• Connect the DV camera (iLink connection) to the computer (FireWire connection) using a FireWire cable.
• Put the camera in Playback or VCR mode.
• Set the right preferences for iMovie in iMovie->Preferences...
• Deselect “Automatically start new clip at scene break”
• Deselect “Filter audio from camera”
• Choose PAL or NTSC for new projects
• In iMovie, select File->New project ..., give it a name and select a destination.
• Put iMovie in Camera mode (switch button from “scissors” to “camera”).
• Locate the beginning of the recording using the controls and click “Import” to start capturing.
• Cick “Import” again to stop capturing.
2. Export WAV audio
• Put iMovie in Edit mode (switch button from “camera” to “scissors”)
• Drag a clip from the Clip viewer (right) to the Timeline (bottom)

Using the Configuration Utility
1. Connect the computer to an Ethernet Network that can communicate with the NetLinx Control System (FIG. 2).
