Code Architects Practical Guidelines IntroductionAs weird as it might sound, you are reading a book that was born almost accidentally. When we began to work on this material, we weren’t even thinking of writing a book. Our initial, quite unpretentious goal was to define a list of guidelines for internal use in Code Architects, the software company we founded in 2002.
We founded Code Architects when we realized the extent of the Microsoft .NET Framework potential and the impact it would have on the developers’ community and on the way enterprise-level applications are designed and implemented. Before long, we found ourselves working on software projects that included 400,000 lines of code, mainly written in C# but with some portions developed with Visual Basic. Projects of this size are simply too large for just one or two programmers, and you need more than plain good will to write them in an orderly way. Instead, you need coding discipline and, above all, a set of well-defined and proven guidelines. These guidelines are essential when many developers with different expertise levels and knowledge backgrounds work at the same project.
In the long run, our initial checklist of recommended practices grew in size and included special cases and exceptions meant to accommodate the imperfect world of software development. We also added code examples and short sample projects. But foremost, we discussed nearly all the guidelines in our internal forum and weighed the opinions of Code Architect’s’ team of .NET experts, which includes renowned writers and conference speakers (who are mentionedUnderstanding Microsoft's Web TechnologiesIn the beginning, the World Wide Web (WWW) was flat. It was an electronic library where academics and scientists posted dissertations and dusty data for reading with clunky, text-only browsers. With the advent of graphical browsers, the consumer oriented Web took off. Content became vastly more colorful. Remember where you were the first time you experienced the exciting blink and marquee tags? (I bet you wish you could forget those gems!) Anyway, the Web has evolved as a rich, interactive, and personalized medium. In the new version of Web (Web 2.0), functional pages aren’t enough. User experience (abbreviated as UX in geekspeak) is hot, and sites are cool. This chapter looks at Microsoft’s tools and technologies for creating and delivering engaging Web content.
Microsoft has a range of tools for authoring Web pages that appeal to several
skill levels. Some tools are more suited to Web page design, while others are
more appropriate to programming.

When Bill Gates realized that Microsoft was lagging on the Internet front, the word went out to integrate Web support into every product. As a result, you can save Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, and PowerPoint slides as Web pages.
Many companies use the Office suite to place information on their intranet because most employees are comfortable in Word and Excel. These tools are quite adequate for creating static Web content that some call brochure ware. Although somewhat bloated, the pages are faithful reproductions of the original document — especially when viewed in Microsoft’s latest Internet ExplorerThe Forrester Wave: Application Server PlatformsApplication server platforms are the most important category of application platform software for most enterprises. An application server platform is infrastructure software for building Web and composite applications and, increasingly, applications based on service-oriented architecture (SOA) design principles. - App server platforms are the most strategic of all application platforms. According to data from Forrester’s Business Data Services, Microsoft’s .NET and Java/J2EE have consistently finished at the top of the list of most commonly used development platforms. .NET and Java/ J2EE are the core technologies for most application server platforms. Hot new platform options, including Ruby on Rails, Java Spring, and PHP, and new hosted platforms like salesforce.com’s Apex are simply not as important to platform buyers in our surveys yet, and older platforms like 4GLs and host platforms are in declining usage (see Figure 1).· - Application server platforms help customers consolidate to save money. Many customers turn to application server platforms and suites and dump their best-of-breed products. Why? Application server platforms offer higher volume discounts and reduced product integration costs.
- App server platforms are the base for a growing number of solutions. Buyers of many packaged business applications either use application server platforms now or soon will, adding to the importance of this category. Microsoft’s Dynamics packaged applications are based on its .NET platform. In the case of object-oriented languages, most concurrency issues are related to the concept of active object (Atkinson 91), (Guerraoui 95) et (Tripathi, Oosten et al. 99). Concrete examples of concurrent object oriented languages are Act++ , Hybrid (Nierstratz 1987), ABCL (Yonezawa, Shibayama et al. 87), Argus (Liskov 1988), PRAL RT (Fouquier and Terrier 95), RTGOL (Sourrouille and Lecoeuche 95), TOM , etc.
