  • AutoCAD 2000 in 3D - A Monkish Shot Tower
  • This tutorial introduces the concepts and techniques used to build 3D models in AutoCAD 2000. As a vehicle for learning these techniques, we develop a model of a whimsical structure that I have called the Monkish Shot Tower after a group of imaginary Monks who have refined the technology of manufacturing lead shot for firearms, and the like. The tower is designed around the perfect number 7, features an external spiral stair, an elaborate canopy on top, and a hole down the centre. The final structure is illustrated in Figure 1 below. This tutorial will introduce the following concepts and techniques: • simple solid modelling with solid primitives & CSG operations (the tower); • construction of complex solid objects (stair and landing); • user coordinate systems and positioning of objects (external stairs); • advanced use of the CSG operations (tapering the stairs); • simple surface modelling (the roof canopy and handrails); • surface modelling versus solid modelling (the handrails); • meshed surfaces (the landing “sails” for shading). As with every drawing that you produce with AutoCAD you should begin by establishing your drawing area by setting the Drawing Limits, Units and using Zoom All to expand out to a full view of your drawing area. Do that now, setting the limits to 20000 x 15000. For this model, we will make use of several different layers for handling different parts of the model. Begin by calling up the Layer Control dialogue box (see button at left) and create two new layers called “Construction” and “Tower”, setting each to a different
  • Diesel Engine Basics Manual
  • Diesel Engines Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Diesels are workhorse engines. That’s why you find them powering heavy-duty trucks, buses, tractors, and trains, not to mention large ships, bulldozers, cranes, and other construction equipment. In the past, diesels fit the stereotype of muscle-bound behe-moths. They were dirty and sluggish, smelly and loud. That image doesn’t apply to today’s diesel engines, however, and tomorrow’s diesels will show even greater improvements. They will be even more fuel efficient, more flexible in the fuels they can use, and also much cleaner in emissions. Free PDF Diesel Engine Basics Manual

  • Introduction to Ajax for Page Authors
  • It's almost impossible today to be involved in web application design or development and not be aware of Ajax, a technology that includes but is not limited to Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. That's because Ajax is currently the primary technique for driving the high responsiveness and interactivity of some of the most popular applications on the web such as Google Maps and Flickr. These applications are representative of a new generation of highly responsive, highly interactive web applications, referred to as Web 2.0 applications, that often involve users collaborating online and sharing content. Ajax has different implications for developers working in different roles. For example, component developers creating custom components for web applications build Ajax functionality into the design. Page authors use these Ajax components, along with widgets, JavaScript technology, and other techniques, to incorporate Ajax functionality into their web applications. Ajax impacts other roles too. For example, enterprise application developers need to add logic in server-side components to handle Ajax-related requests directed to the server. What You Need to Know About Ajax As a page author, you don't need to understand every detail of the Ajax methodology to incorporate it into a web page. However, you should have a general idea of what Ajax is and how it works. As this article mentioned earlier, Ajax enables the high responsiveness of many web applications. For example, a web site such as Google Maps uses Ajax to provide a highly responsive user interface (UI). You can view a map, then move your cursor across

  • Mobile Ajax for Java ME Technology
  • There are many Sun Microsystems technologies that use Ajax [Ajax], and more than one way to use Ajax on mobile platforms. For example, applications written using the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE, formerly known as J2EE) may generate XML, JSON [JSON], XHTML and/or ECMAScript destined for mobile browsers. One of the recent advances on the Java Platform, Mobile Edition (Java ME, formerly known as J2ME) is the Mobile Service Architecture [MSA]. MSA is a Java Specification Request (JSR-248) which defines a set of APIs for Java ME which include a wide variety of features, from Bluetooth to payment, multimedia APIs and support for rich, animated graphics. This paper discusses an effort to provide Java ME developers with tools to create Mobile Ajax applications, combining the simplicity and familiarity of the Ajax programming model with the richness and secure environment of the MSA APIs. This effort takes the form of an open-source library that can be added to any Java ME application. The paper briefly describes this library along with some sample use cases. Mobile Ajax For The Java ME Platform Ajax is typically used in the context of Web applications running in a browser and using XmlHttpRequest from ECMAScript to retrieve XML or JSON data from RESTful Web Services. The results are applied as updates to the current browser's page DOM (Document Object Model [DOM]). In the scope of this paper, Mobile Ajax on the Java ME platform is used to mean the following: ? Asynchronous call to the network (using the Mobile Information Device
  • Using Facebook Pages to reach users: the experiences of University of Wolverhampton
  • Social networking websites have been steadily gaining popularity over the last few years. A recent OFCOM report (OFCOM, 2008) demonstrated that 22% of adults in the UK had registered with a social networking site (the figure is highest for 16-24 year olds and decreases with age). Facebook is, at present, the most visited social networking site and has over 130 million active users (Facebook, 2008a). This article shares the experiences of University of Wolverhampton’s pilot project into the use of Facebook pages for academic libraries. During 2007, we noticed that many of our students using PCs in the University of Wolverhampton Learning Centres were regular visitors of Facebook. Each member of the University is given a University e-mail address as well as access to our VLE, but from talking to students, I found that some were choosing to use Facebook as the platform to communicate with their cohort and organise group work. Academic staff had also started to use Facebook, mainly as a forum for social interaction within their classes but also as a way for students to communicate with them. Some libraries had been using Facebook to set up a profile for the library. However, Facebook regulations permitted this (profiles should be for individuals only) and many were closed. In November 2007, Facebook began Facebook Pages which is designed for businesses and organisations (including libraries) to create a presence. By creating a Facebook page rather than a profile, other Facebook members can become a “fan” and be sent updates via Facebook.
  • Nissan 350Z Touring (Manual) Complete Report
  • In 2002, when Nissan finally brought to market an all-new Z-car worthy of its name and heritage, it quickly made our 10Best list. We loved the new Z's great design, performance, and outstanding value. Last year, Nissan made us more happy with a brilliant new 350Z roadster. For 2005, there's a 35th-anniversary edition to mark the debut of the original 240Z in 1970. Otherwise, there are only some refinements that make this good car better, such as downshift rev matching for the five-speed automatic transmission that makes better use of the spirited 287-hp, 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 engine. To maximize performance, go with the close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox-and no more trembling left legs, as clutch-pedal effort has been reduced. Other upgrades include a quicker nav system, heated outside mirrors, and a standard tire-pressure monitoring system. I could feel my heart pounding faster. Just two more cars to go before it was my turn—a Ford GT and an Aston Martin DB9. Here at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed, 50,000 fans brave huge traffic jams and torrential downpours to watch the now-famous runs up "the Hill." Winding its way through the majestic Goodwood estate, a simple 1.16-mile-long road course has become a mecca for everything that's fast on two wheels or four. The Earl of March, estate owner and event patron, is the epitome of English nobility. Overseer of some 12,000 acres of land in Sussex, England, the earl was inspired to conceive this blue-ribbon event by the benevolence of his grandfather, the
