  • Over the last decade, research in parallel architectures has led to many new parallel systems. These systems range from multiprocessors with shared address spaces, multi-computers with distributed address spaces, to networks of high performance workstations. Furthermore, the development of high speed interconnection networks makes it possible to connect the systems together, forming a tremendous computational resource. An effective way to use these machines is to partition a computation into coarse-grain tasks. The current language support for this computing environment is, however, rather primitive: programmers must explicitly manage the hardware resources using low level communication and synchronization primitives. This paper presents Jade, a new language designed to simplify the expression of coarse-grain parallelism. Download Semantic Foundations of Jade pdf
  • Guide to Cataloging DVDs Using AACR2r Chapters 7 and 9
  • This section provides a general overview of DVD technology. Topics covered include a brief history, a comparison of DVDs with compact disc (CD) technology, the different types of DVD that are currently available, and a glimpse at the future of DVDs. History DVDs were first developed in 1995 through a consortium of ten companies: Hitachi, JVC, Matsushita, Mitsubishi, Philips, Pioneer, Sony, Thomson, Time Warner, and Toshiba. These companies formed the DVD Consortium, which in April 1997 became the DVD Forum. The mission of the forum is to promote the worldwide acceptance of DVD products across the entertainment, consumer electronics and IT industries. In early 2000, membership in the DVD Forum reached some 230 companies and organizations that are engaged in DVD research, development and/or manufacturing. Although DVD once stood for “Digital Video Disc” or “Digital Versatile Disc,” DVD now simply stands for DVD. DVD types DVD-A (DVD-Audio) — Equivalent to an standard audio CD which uses Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) for recording sound, except that it holds some seven times the information of a regular CD. DVD-V (DVD-Video) — What most people think of when referring to the DVD. Usually used to store video recordings. DVD-R (DVD-Recordable) — A write-once data storage disc that is similar to CD-Rs. It can record around 4.7 gigabytes, and is used mainly for the archiving of information and the storage of video recordings. DVD-RAM (DVD-Re-writable) — An erasable, re-recordable version of the DVD-ROM. Provides random access to its 4.7 gigabytes of recorded information, and is best suited for use in computers.

  • Water Resource Planning Application Tutorial
  • All SimBLOX simulation products employ an agent-based or object-oriented architecture. This allows the user to create very large, complex, macro-level simulation models by connecting together many smaller, easily understandable, micro-level “building block” models. In this simple tutorial, we will show you how to use the Water Resource Planning SimBRIX. INSTALLING THE WATER RESOURCE PLANNING SimBRIX: Before you install the Water Resource SimBRIX, you must make sure you have already installed the SimBLOX application. If you have not done so, refer to the documentation included with the SimBLOX application for instructions on how to properly install it, or if you do not have the SimBLOX software, please contact us. Our contact information is available at the end of this tutorial. After you have verified that SimBLOX is installed SimBLOX, double-click the file called “setup.exe” to begin the installation of the Water Resource SimBRIX. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. Once the installation is completed you will then need to open SimBLOX to access the Water Resource Planning SimBRIX. The current version only works on IBM-compatible PC’s running Windows 2000, XP or Vista with the .NET 2.0 Framework installed. The .NET 2.0 Framework is available as a free download from Microsoft. Please visit the resources page on the viaSim website (www.viasimcorp.com) for a link to download this software directly from the Microsoft website. • Model the perfect 3D face in Maya
  • Want to get your head around 3D modelling? We use Maya to show you how to build an animatable face feature by feature… There are many ways in which to model a head in 3D. In this tutorial, we'll look at polygon modelling with subdivision smoothing formesh refinement. This approach enables you to create the topology of the face mesh in a very direct and hands-on manner. With NURBS modelling, creating a human head can be problematic, and the best method involves stitching multiple surfaces together. This takes an awful lot of planning and isn’t a method you can jump straight into. Polygon modelling enables you to correct mistakes more easily. Correct topology (the way a surface is structured) is the single most important aspect of head modelling. We'll be creating special topological structures, known as ‘edge loops', which outline areas of the face and mimic the rings of muscle underthe skin. Without properloops, a head will be difficult to animate. We’ll also be making sure all the polygons have fourvertices (called quads). A mesh of all quads is less likely to pinch when smoothed and animated. Although this tutorial uses Maya, the principles employed are applicable whateverapp you use. • Integrating Existing Software Toolkits into VO System
  • Virtual Observatory (VO) is a collection of interoperating data archives and software tools. Taking advantages of the latest information technologies, it aims to provide a data-intensively online research environment for astronomers all around the world. A large number of high-qualified astronomical software packages and libraries are powerful and easy of use, and have been widely used by astronomers for many years. Integrating those toolkits into the VO system is a necessary and important task for the VO developers. VO architecture greatly depends on Grid and Web services, consequently the general VO integration route is "Java Ready – Grid Ready – VO Ready". In the paper, we discuss the importance of VO integration for existing toolkits and discuss the possible solutions. We introduce two efforts in the field from China-VO project, "gImageMagick" and " Galactic abundance gradients statistical research under grid environment". We also discuss what additional work should be done to convert Grid service to VO service. Virtual Observatory (VO) is the result of combination of Astronomy and the latest information technologies. VO is driven by astronomical research and education, but is enabled by the latest technical progresses, especially those in computer science and network. One of the final goals of different VO projects from different countries and regions is to setup an International Virtual Observatory (IVO). While, the basic aim of the IVO is to provide uniform resource access to its users. The resources provided by the IVO are all kinds of resources related to astronomical research, education and outreach, including but
