  • Web 2.0 vs. the Semantic Web: A Philosophical Assessment
  • The paper develops some of the conclusions, reached in Floridi (2007), concerning the future developments of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and their impact on our lives. The two main theses supported in that article were that, as the information society develops, the threshold between online and offline is becoming increasingly blurred, and that, once there won’t be any significant difference, we shall gradually re-conceptualise ourselves not as cyborgs but rather as inforgs, i.e. socially connected, informational organisms. In this paper, I look at the development of the so-called Semantic Web and Web 2.0 from this perspective and try to forecast their future. Regarding the Semantic Web, I argue that it is a clear and well-defined project, which, despite some authoritative views to the contrary, is not a promising reality and will probably fail in the same way AI has failed in the past. Regarding Web 2.0, I argue that, although it is a rather ill-defined project, which lacks a clear explanation of its nature and scope, it does have the potentiality of becoming a success (and indeed it is already, as part of the new phenomenon of Cloud Computing) because it leverages the only semantic engines available so far in nature, us. I conclude by suggesting what other changes might be expected in the future of our digital environment. What is the next stage in the development of the Web? At least since the dot-com mess, the question has kept pundits and techno-fans on their toes. The recent reshaping of the

  • Implementing a Caching and Tiling Map Server: a Web 2.0 Case Study
  • Modern Geographical Information Systems (GIS) [1] provide a service-oriented architecture for interacting with geographical data sets and related maps. Web-based GIS systems are architected around the same principles as more general Web service systems based on SOAP [2], WSDL [3], and REST. Mirroring the World Wide Web Consortium and OASIS Web service standards-making bodies, the Open Geospatial Consortium [5] defines open standards for messages, XML data formats, and access protocols that are specific to the GIS community. In addition to OGC-based services, there are many companies (such as ESRI and AutoDesk) that provide proprietary, commercial solutions. Services from these various providers are not normally interoperable. The methods of the traditional GIS community have been challenged in the last two years by the emergence of new, lighter-weight approaches towards building clients and integrating data. The availability of Google Maps, Google Earth, Microsoft’s TeraServer, Yahoo! Maps and similar systems has enabled enthusiasts and part-time developers to make highly interactive Web interfaces to these companies’ services and to integrate their maps with local data. Google Maps in particular is an important example of the so-called Web 2.0 development approach [6]: Google has built and maintains a high performance, highly scalable map service (available for free) that has a relatively simple, JavaScript-based programming interface. This simple but powerful public interface to a very complicated service is the hallmark of Web 2.0, since it democratizes the client development process: very little programming skill is required to build custom Web applications and to combine them with data
  • Writing Scripts with PHP’s PEAR DB Module
  • As a web programming language, one of PHP’s strengths traditionally has been to make it easy to write scripts that access databases so that you can create dynamic web pages that incorporate database content. This is important when you want to provide visitors with information that is always up-to-date, without hand tweaking a lot of static HTML pages. However, although PHP is easy to use, it includes no general-purpose database access interface. Instead it has a number of specialized ones that take the form of separate sets of functions for each database system. There is one set for MySQL, another for InterBase, and another for PostgreSQL—and others as well. This wide range of support for different database engines help make PHP popular because it means essentially that no matter which database you use, PHP probably supports it. On the other hand, having a different set of functions for each database also makes PHP scripts non-portable at the lexical (source code) level. For example, the function for issuing a SQL statement is named mysql_query(), ibase_query(), or pg_exec(), depending on whether you are using MySQL, InterBase, or Post-greSQL. This necessitates a round of messy script editing to change function names if you want to use your scripts with a different database engine, or if you obtain scripts from someone who doesn’t use the same engine you do. In PHP 4 and up, this problem is addressed by means of a database module included in PEAR (the PHP Extension and Add-on Repository). The PEAR DB

  • Dell Latitude L400 Service Manual
  • This manual provides instructions for removing and replacing field-replaceable components, assemblies, and subassemblies in your Dell Latitude computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure in this manual assumes the following conditions: • The computer and any attached peripherals are turned off, and the peripherals are disconnected from the I/O panel on the back and right side of the computer. • A part can be replaced by performing the removal procedure in reverse order unless otherwise noted. When the display assembly is open nearly 180 degrees, use a book or something similar to support it. The angle of the display assembly with respect to the bottom case should never exceed 180 degrees. Also, when performing the procedures in this manual, the locations or directions relative to the computer are as shown in Figure 1 unless otherwise specified. • SSH tips, tricks & protocol tutorial
  • SSH (Secure SHell) is a network protocol which provides a replacement for insecure remote login and command execution facilities, such as telnet, rlogin and rsh. SSH encrypts traffic in both directions, preventing traffic sniffing and password theft. SSH also offers several additional useful features: • Compression: traffic may be optionally compressed at the stream level. • Public key authentication: optionally replacing password authentication. • Authentication of the server: making ”man-in-the-middle” attack more difficult • Port forwarding: arbitrary TCP sessions can be forwarded over an SSH connection. • X11 forwarding: SSH can forward your X11 sessions too. • File transfer: the SSH protocol family includes two file transfer protocols. SSH was created by Tatu Ylonen in 1995 and was at first released under an open-source license. Later versions were to bear increasing restrictive licenses, though they generally remained free for non-commercial use. He went on to form SSH Communications security which sells commercial SSH implementations to this day. The earlier versions of his code implement what is now referred to as SSH protocol v.1. In 1997 a process began to make the SSH protocols Internet standards under the auspices of the IETF. This lead to the development of version 2 of the SSH protocol. In the rewrite, the protocol was split into a transport layer, and connection and authentication protocols. Several security issues were also addressed as part of this process.
