Writing on the Web (2.0)?In most scientific disciplines, the majority of academic papers are written collaboratively. They also tend to undergo several rounds of revision, with new content often being added after peer review and style and format reworked for target journals. Currently, this tends to involve emailing versions of the document between authors, or storing versions on shared drives. However, a new breed of online applications that mimic the functions of desktop applications could change the process of producing a scientific paper.
Ajax and the writable web
The traditional problem with using web applications to perform functions similar to those carried out by personal computers is the time it takes for the client to communicate with the server. This means there is a delay in performing the command given by the user. Recently, Google Earth demonstrated that this barrier had been removed: moving the mouse on your personal computer results in instantaneous spin or zoom onscreen. Google Suggest is another example: with every keystroke the suggestions in the drop-down box are updated (1).
The secret to the instant responses of this new generation of web applications, sometimes referred to as WYSIWYG (‘what you see is what you get’), is the use of Ajax. Ajax stands for Asynchronous JavaScript + XML and, in these applications, is used to form an extra layer between the server and the client, simultaneously creating the visible interface that the user sees and maintaining continual contact with the server. This allows the user’s interaction with the application to occur asynchronously, giving thePhotoshop icycles Tutorial in PDFEasy Icyicles tutorial at photoshop, Step 1 Create a new documents, make the background black and white and use the elliptical marquee tool to draw a circle and fill it with white. Application development generally starts with consideration of the design model, then moves to more user interface oriented tasks. The Eclipse Modeling Framework is designed to ease the design and implementation of a structured model. The Java framework provides a code generation facility in order to keep the focus on the model itself and not on its implementation details. The key concepts underlying the framework are: meta-data, code generation, and default serialization.

Download pdf CE-Star Suite for Pocket PC2003/203SE Users Manual GuideHow Web 2.0 can leverage Model Engineering in PracticeWith the rise of model-driven development, model repositories are intended to facilitate research in model engineering and consequently in domain-specific modeling. Model repositories are central places where all kinds of modeling artifacts (e.g., meta-metamodels, metamodels, models, and possibly transformation models) are stored and coordinated. They can serve as a platform for making available the specification of metamodels to others (typically necessary for domain-specific modeling languages) and for exchanging models, as well as a resource for teaching/learning materials.
There have been started some intiatives for building model repositories, e.g., zoomm.org, www.kermeta.org/mrep, or the Atlas MegaModel Management (AM3) [1]. The latter one is hosted within the popular Eclipse environment and is a subproject of the Generative Modeling Technologies (GMT) project. The artifacts present in this model repository, furthermore, are organized into sets of models of similar nature called zoos, e.g. a zoo for metamodels and a zoo for transformations [4]. The AM3 zoos are continuously growing and provide a respectable source of information in the meantime.
However, a more popular way of storing and organizing modeling artifacts is probably having a CVS like server software at hand. These repositories provide all means necessary to handle different versions of textual artifacts and let them compare syntactically. It seams therefore obvious to use existing tools also to store models as they can be serialized into the XMI format. Although versioning of models remains an open and challenging research field [11, 12], basic support for versioning models can be provided by CVS. CVS repositories can also be
