  • In this first tutorial you will learn how to start AutoCAD, save a drawing, and a range of common drawing commands. Start AutoCAD by clicking on the Windows Start button (bottom left), then move the mouse to Programs then CAD and Modelling then "AutoCAD Architectural Desktop 2" and click on AutoCAD Architectural Desktop 2. A dialog giving various startup options will be displayed. Select the second option: "Start from Scratch" and click OK.   • Since you're going to be stuck using Visual Studio .NET anyway, at least for this edition of the .NET Compact Framework, you might as well get familiar with some of the features it provides. A lot of the things in Visual Studio .NET are targeted at database development, Web development, and other projects very different from .NET Compact Framework programming, but there are at least two features beyond the basic code entry and compilation which are well worth learning: IntelliSense, which helps you type correct code, and the debugging features, which can help you sort out what's going on when your program logic doesn't behave as expected. If you've used Visual Studio .NET before, this chapter may not be very exciting to you. Feel free to skip around. IntelliSense IntelliSense is a feature Microsoft provides to help you navigate through the ever-growing number of methods and parameters in their libraries and the code you write yourself. Thanks to IntelliSense, whenever you type an object or variable name it recognizes and type a period, you'll get a menu of choices that Visual Studio .NET thinks might be appropriate there. Type the first few letters, and IntelliSense will show you the possibilities corresponding to what you typed. Hit the space bar (or any other key that isn't allowed in a variable, property, or method name, and it will fill in the rest for you.   • This piece of article will show you step by step of how the dragon is created using Maya. There are three type of modeling method in Maya, NURBS modeling, Subdivision modeling and Polygon modeling, each of them have their advantages and disadvantages. However we will build the dragon using patch NURBS surface techniques. The tools that I use to model this dragon are Birail tools, NURBS primitive, Fillet Blend Tools and etc. In the first section, I will show you how the dragon is created by using Maya. Next section, texturing the dragon will be shown. We need to paint the texture and create bump map in PhotoShop, but before that, I will need Deep Paint 3D to create reference line on how the texture will be distorted by NURBS. The detail will be covered in the texturing section. Before I start launching Maya, I will do some concept sketching on paper. This is important, as it will be easier for me to visualise the object I have in mind later on. I wanted to create a dragon between realistic and imaginative. I want it to look like a T-Rex but with horn and larger forelimbs. Only the side orthographic is needed to create the model. When I have done, I will scan in the sketch and save it as JPEG.   • VisualSVN is a transparent integration of the Subversion version control system to the Visual Studio development environment. VisualSVN allows you to take full control on any changes in the project that are made by you or your colleagues. With VisualSVN you can easily see the full history of modifications and restore previous versions of your project. So, you can treat it as a “smart time machine”. VisualSVN is built on the base of the Subversion open source version control system that is a de-facto standard storage system for software projects. There are a lot of tools and services available for Subversion such as code review systems and hosting providers. With VisualSVN you can use these tools and services without limitations. What is Subversion? Subversion is a centralized multiuser version control system. Project files and full history of modifications are stored in a repository. The repository can be located both on a server, and on a local computer. Each developer has his own copy of the project on the local computer, which is called the working copy. You can freely make any changes in your working copy, such as modifying files, adding new files, renaming files and folders and so on. And you don't even need a permanent connection to the repository. For example, you can work on your laptop on a plane. When a logical bundle of modifications is ready, you can upload it to the repository as a single atomic commit. Subversion automatically prevents overwrites of modifications that are made by another developer.
