For more informationDistricting Competition Tutorial Using ArcGIS 9.3 and Districting WizardThis tutorial is designed to show the user how to use ArcGIS software and the Districting extension to prepare and submit a plan for the Competition. Please refer to the document “FINAL Rules of the Competition” for details and rules about this project including the rules and procedures of the competition.
This tutorial, which also serves as a manual, provides instructions on how to use many of the tools, functions, and options available in ArcGIS and the Districting extension that will help the user create proposed plans for this project. However, because the tutorial was written in a relatively limited timeframe many functions and options of the software that may also be useful are not covered. Persons with more experience with GIS software in general and with ArcGIS in particular may be able to more easily learn and use these additional functions.
Please follow the tutorial carefully as missed steps or incorrect specifications or actions can cause errors and much frustration. Please expect that it will take several practices and some hours of work to become comfortably efficient with the software.
The software is the product of ESRI and may not always work as expected or desired. The authors of this document are only responsible for the tutorial and the two tools that were created to assist the competition – the Compactness Tool and the Fragmentation Tool.

Download PDFEngaging the YouTube Google-Eyed Generation: Strategies for Using Web 2.0 in Teaching and LearningYouTube, Podcasting, Blogs, Wikis and RSS are buzz words currently associated with the term Web 2.0 and represent a shifting pedagogical paradigm for the use of a new set of tools within education. The implication here is a possible shift from the basic archetypical vehicles used for (e)learning today (lecture notes, printed material, PowerPoint, websites, animation) towards a ubiquitous user-centric, user-content generated and user- guided experience. It is not sufficient to use online learning and teaching technologies simply for the delivery of content to students. A new “Learning Ecology” is present where these Web 2.0 technologies can be explored for collaborative and (co)creative purposes as well as for the critical assessment, evaluation and personalization of information.
Web 2.0 technologies provide educators with many possibilities for engaging students in desirable practices such as collaborative content creation, peer assessment and motivation of students through innovative use of media. These can be used in the development of authentic learning tasks and enhance the learning experience. However in order for a new learning tool, be it print, multimedia, blog, podcast or video, to be adopted, educators must be able to conceptualize the possibilities for use within a concrete framework. This paper outlines some possible strategies for educators to incorporate the use of some of these Web 2.0 technologies into the student learning experience.
Why should the notion of incorporating Web 2.0 and interacting with for example socially distributed and user-created videos (e.g. from www.youtube.com) be important within education? In what ways has the rapid development ofDetecting CGI Script AbuseMost Internet servers sit behind firewalls and use detection scripts to send alerts when break?ins are attempted. Some system administrators even run software to detect portscanners and denial?of?service attempts. However, many system administrators still overlook security problems in CGI scripts and web applications.
As demonstrated by recent security alerts, improperly written CGI scripts and web applications can let crackers read system files, obtain passwords, crash the server or worse. A system may be firewalled and hardened against remote logins, FTP access and denial of service attacks, yet have many well?known holes in the server's web applications and CGI scripts.
Trapping 404 errors:
One method we have used to detect CGI script abuse is to redirect all "404 Not Found" responses from the web server to a script that examines the request for suspicious activity. Both Apache and iPlanet / Netscape web servers allow customized error messages. Either custom HTML files can be output or scripts can be executed in response to any of the standard HTTP request errors. Since a properly secured web server will not contain any of the well?known CGI vulnerabilities, any attempt by an outside to look for them results in a 404 Not Found response.
Apache comes with an example script "phf_abuse_log.cgi" you can use to log attempt to access phf. This concept can be expanded to look for any suspicious URL request (such any request containing "/etc/passwd" on a unix server) each time a 404 error is raised in the CGI?BIN directory. Download PDFCommand Line Rendering in MayaThere are various benefits to rendering using the command line instead of though Maya and this tutorial will guide you through the process on a windows operating platform. If you have a scene that is particularly complex scene or render then having the extra available memory that Maya would have been using if it were open can really help. Using the command line method is also a quick way to change settings for your rendering of multiple files. If you needed to render a low-res preview for a client for example you could do that using this rendering technique rather than having you open up a series of files to edit them all individually.
The feature about rendering from the command line that personally I find to be most valuable is that it allows you to set-up a render queue. You can have multiple scene files, for example different shots or render passes and have them render one after another. So you don’t need to baby-sit your computer while rendering.
