  • From Web 1.0 to Web 2.0
  • The concept of “Web 2.0” was born in the first Web 2.0 Conference organized by O’Reilly and MediaLive International in 2004. The concept was further elaborated in the article “ What is Web 2.0 Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software” published by Tim O’Reilly in 2005. Generally, Web 2.0 denotes the paradigm of employing the Web as the platform to deliver and use software. Nevertheless, what user experiences, design patterns and technologies Web 2.0 actually encompasses are not concretely bound and they keep evolving. As described in Wikipedia, “Given the lack of set standards as to what ‘Web 2.0’ actually means, implies, or requires, the term can mean radically different things to different people.” In this paper, Web 2.0 is defined as the innovative use of the World Wide Web to expand social and business outreach to and exploit collective intelligence from the community. The features of Web 2.0 from the user behavior and software design perspectives are discussed. A high level technical architecture to support Web 2.0 features is also covered. Finally, the limitations of current technologies are discussed in order to analyze the new technology development in the Web 2.0 model. Web 2.0 advocates the Web architecture that promotes users’ participation and collaboration. Web 2.0 becomes the platform for users to share, contribute, review and enhance information resources. Flickr and YouTube provide virtually unlimited media repositories for users to share photos and videos respectively. Collaboratively edited by any Web users, Wikipedia has become one of
  • OPQ32 Technical Manual
  • This Technical Manual is intended to be read in conjunction with the OPQ32 User Manual. The content of the latter focus on administration, scoring, norming and interpretation issues, and is intended to cover all the matters one needs to refer to when using the OPQ32. The technical manual is intended for reference purposes and provides all the technical backup needed when evaluating the OPQ32 in terms of its suitability for use. The following summaries provide outlines of the contents of each chapter. Chapter 1 - Introduction The OPQ32 model is an occupational model of personality, which describes 32 dimensions or scales of people's preferred or typical style of behaviour at work. The OPQ32 is designed to be an international model, reflecting the changing nature of work at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It is particularly appropriate for use with professional and managerial groups, although the content of the OPQ32 model deals with personality characteristics important to a wide variety of roles. The OPQ32 model follows the general OPQ model of personality, which breaks personality down into three domains: Relationships with People, Thinking Styles and Feelings and Emotions. The three domains are joined by a potential fourth — the Dynamism domain — which is composed of scales such as Vigorous, Achieving and Competitive that relate to sources of energy. The OPQ model of personality provides OPQ users with a clear framework for interpreting complex patterns of personality. Chapter 2 - Test Materials and Use This chapter provides a brief outline of the range of OPQ32 materials that
  • Web 2.0 Handouts
  • During the 25 years that I have delivered professional development activities for educators, I have always tried to model the technologies and techniques that I was teaching. In recent years, the efforts have had less to do with specific technologies, software products, services, and much more to do with philosophies where learning happens as part of continuing and multi-dimensional conversations among learners and teachers, and others on the Net. This is what the emerging new web, web 2.0 has done to my vision of education. I have long abandoned the print handout, using it only under those conditions where they are expressly requested by the people who pay me for my services. Otherwise, I point to my web site at the beginning of the presentation demonstrating links to web pages that provide a variety of digital resources for the topic at hand. Until recently, these have been static html documents or pages that were derived from content management systems. The first time that I installed a wiki engine on my web server and produced a web page that could be edited by any visitor to that page, I saw this as the perfect vehicle for providing access to digital content for my workshop participants within the context of education as conversation philosophy mentioned above. Fairly early in the evolution of my wiki handouts, I selected MediaWiki (http://mediawiki.org/) as the engine for my online handouts. Its robustness, richness, availability of various extensions that have been developed by an open-source community of programmers, and security
