  • Google Data APIs Protocol (GData Module)
  • This proposal aims to create a module that implements the GData protocol specification in Drupal. The Google data APIs provide a simple standard protocol, called "GData", for reading and writing data on the web using either of two standard XML-based syndication formats: Atom or RSS. This module will handle all the basic stuff a developer shouldn't have to worry about when developing modules that extend its functionality such as data transfer, protocol adherence, and authentication. It will expose its own API which will allow other developers to create modules that easily interact with information provided by Google's many service APIs. Using this module, module developers who need access to this information need only concern themselves with what's important: the data. This module will benefit Drupal by providing developers with an easy way to interact with information provided by Google's many service APIs without worrying about all the behind-the-scenes stuff that goes into accessing and modifying that information. This opens up a world of possibilities for integrating Google applications into Drupal. Some ideas that could be more easily implemented using the API provided by a GData module include, but are not limited to, the following: • Using Gooogle's Apps API to integrate various Google applications into Drupal, allowing it to be a competitor with other online groupware suites such as Microsoft SharePoint. • Integrating Google Base Data into dynamic Drupal applications using Google's Base Data API. • Creating a Drupal front-end to Google's Blogger service through its Blogger Data API, allowing for the administration of

  • Guide to the Secure Configuration and Administration of Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.0
  • This document is only a guide containing recommended security settings. It is not meant to replace well-structured policy or sound judgment. Furthermore this guide does not address site-specific configuration issues. Care must be taken when implementing this guide to address local operational and policy concerns. The security changes described in this document only apply to Microsoft Windows 2000 systems and should not be applied to any other Windows 2000 versions or operating systems. This document contains possible recommended settings for the system Registry. Windows 2000 System Internet Information Services 5.0 can be severely impaired or disabled with incorrect changes or accidental deletions when using a Registry editor (Regedt32.exe or Regedit.exe) to change the system configuration. There is no “undo” command for deletions within the Registry. Registry editor prompts user to confirm the deletions if “Confirm on Delete” is selected from the options menu. When user deletes a key, the message does not include the name of the key being deleted. Check selection carefully before proceeding. • Cyberinfrastructure and Web 2.0
  • Cyberinfrastructure 1 and e-Science 1 are conventionally presented in terms of Grid technologies 2 3 that support remote access to computational science resources (such as supercomputers), distributed data management, networked instruments and similar technologies. Web Services are a key technology for realizing this vision 4 5. In contrast to these heavyweight approaches, however, many important innovations in network programming are emerging outside the (by now) traditional Web Services framework and are collectively known as Web 2.0 6. As we discuss in this chapter, these developments need to be tracked and incorporated into the e-Science vision. This chapter reviews some of the core Web 2.0 concepts by considering their impact on e-Science activities. For a related perspective on these issues, see 7. Web 2.0 is not a specific set of technologies and is best characterized as a movement towards network programming for everyone. The blurred distinction between a Web application and a Web tool (such as Google’s My Maps and Yahoo’s Pipes applications) means that even non-programmers can make sophisticated custom Web applications. In contrast to Web 2.0, the Enterprise-centric view of Web technologies holds that Web development is the domain of highly trained programmers working in very sophisticated development environments with complicated service interface and message specifications. Enterprise technologies are characterized by various Web software vendor efforts from Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, Sun, HP, and others. Grid computing is closely aligned (through the Open Grid Forum 8, for example) with Enterprise computing. The numerous Web Service specifications (collectively known as WS-*) have formed
  • Load Balancing a Cluster of Web Servers
  • DNS was found to be of limited value for the purposes of load balancing and fault tolerance of scalable. Web server clusters. The research described in Load Balancing a Cluster of Web Serve † Using Distributed Packet Rewriting Luis Avea Azer Bestavros Lavea@cs.bu.edu Bestavros@cs.bu.edu Computer Science Department Boston Univeity Abstract In this paper, we present and evaluate an implementation of a prototype scalable web server. The prototype coists of a load-balanced cluster of hosts that collectively accept and service TCP connectio. The host IP addresses are advertised using the Round Robin DNS (RR-DNS) technique, allowing any host to receive requests from any client. Once a client attempts to establish a TCP connection with one of the hosts, a decision is made as to whether or not the connection should be redirected to a different host---namely, the host with the lowest number of established connectio. We use the low-overhead Distributed Packet Rewriting (DPR) technique [Bestavros, Crovella, Liu, and Martin 1998] to redirect TCP connectio. In our Download
  • Breaking Eggs And Making Omelettes: Intelligence Gathering For Open Source Software Development
  • There is an ongoing information war raging in the software world. Despite free software developers’ best efforts, new proprietary software continues to proliferate. Improved techniques must be developed to reverse engineer efficiently closed data formats so that free, interoperable solutions can be deployed under Linux. Software reverse engineering occurs on various levels. It may be necessary to study a piece of poorly written, poorly commented code developed in a high-level language such as C++ and understand what the original program was supposed to accomplish. It may also be necessary to disassemble a program that has been compiled into machine language and express it as a higher-level language. In doing this, the underlying algorithms can eventually be expressed as higher-level concepts in a human language. After obtaining an algorithmic description via reverse engineering, the algorithm can be reimplemented for any language on any computing platform. Scope This paper discusses the technical issues and challenges surrounding software reverse engineering. This topic has always been the subject of much legal and ethical controversy, particularly with respect to such intellectual property ideas such as patents, trade secrets, and software ownership. However, that discussion is outside the scope of this paper. Motivation The Linux operating system, as well as free and open source software in general, has made extraordinary strides in the computer world in the past decade. Once confined to the back office server, Linux has become a more viable option for desktop computing. However, in order to create a desktop computing platform (and in some respects, a server)

  • Nortel Secure Network Access and Microsoft Network Access Protection Integration
  • With the ever-increasing need for enterprises to provide endpoint security and policy compliance, Network Access Control (NAC) solutions abound. However, confusion around industry standards, the multitude of NAC vendors and the complexity of the solutions has led to a relatively slow industry-wide NAC adoption rate. In order to increase flexibility, simplicity and comprehensive cross-platform device support, Nortel has worked with Microsoft to provide a joint NAC solution. Interoperability features and benefits Nortel and Microsoft have worked together to integrate the Nortel Secure Network Access (SNA) solution with Microsoft Network Access Protection (NAP). This integration lets customers deploy a NAC solution today, based on Nortel SNA, while allowing them to add Microsoft’s solution at a later date. Microsoft NAP is available with Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista and Windows XP SP3. The key features and benefits of the joint solution include: Cross-platform device support Nortel SNA provides agent technology that runs on both Windows and non-Windows operating systems. NAP's focus on Windows Vista and XP SP3 support, combined with SNA’s extensibility to older Windows versions as well as Mac OS X and Linux, provides a comprehensive solution for enterprises with heterogeneous environments. In addition, SNA integrates IP phones, printers and other non-interactive devices. Download pdf Nortel Secure Network Access and Microsoft Network Access Protection Integration
