  • Building Microsoft Windows Versions of R and R packages under Intel Linux
  • It is simple to build R and R packages for Microsoft Windows from an ix86 Linux machine. This is very useful to package developers who are familiar with Unix tools and feel that widespread dissemination of their work is important. The resulting R binaries and binary library packages require only a minimal amount of work to install under Microsoft Windows. While testing is always important for quality assurance and control, we have found that the procedure usually results in reliable packages. Instructions on cross-building come with the R source [1] in files such as INSTALL, readme.package, and Makefile under the directory src/gnuwin32/. However, it took us a substantial amount of time to get things worked out, and we thought it might be useful to share our experience by by presenting an explicit example. In this document, we intended to automate and illustrate steps for obtaining, installing, and using the cross-compilation tools. hoping that it might save people’s time. These steps have been put into a Makefile, which accompanies this document, for automating the process. The Makefile is available from the contributed documentation area on Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN). The current version has been tested with R-2.1.0. For the impatient and trusting, if a current version of Linux R is in the search path, then make CrossCompileBuild will run all Makefile targets described up to the section, Building R Packages and Bundles. This assumes: (1) you have the Makefile in a directory RCrossBuild (empty except for the makefile), and (2) that ./RCrossBuild is
  • Standardizing Network Access Control: TNC and Microsoft NAP to Interoperate
  • Two leading network access control standards — TCG’s Trusted Network Connect (TNC) and Microsoft’s Network Access Protection (NAP) — will now interoperate, providing enterprises with simpler, more cost-effective, scalable, and interoperable endpoint integrity and network access control. To improve endpoint and network security, enterprises have been quick to embrace the notion of network access control. The concept is simple: when a device — also known as an endpoint — connects to a network, the user’s identity and the health of the endpoint are checked. If they comply with the network’s policies, access to the network is granted. If not, the endpoint may be remediated by applying the latest patches or scanning for viruses. By improving endpoint security, companies can better defend against a number of increasingly complex Internet-borne attacks. Attackers — including organized criminal rings — now often utilize advanced malware which combines rootkits, Trojan applications, and operating system backdoors to exploit endpoints and steal sensitive data. Attackers’ goals include extortion, identity theft, fraud, and even corporate espionage. Organizations must respond with more advanced endpoint security to effectively safeguard valuable information, comply with regulations, and avoid costly data breach notifications. Yet since network access control products came to market, implementers have faced an uphill battle. First, they had to navigate a wide variety of often incompatible appliance, software, and infrastructure-based options. Then they had to select a proprietary approach, attempt to cobble multiple products together into a workable solution, or opt for one of several incompatible network access control frameworks. As a result, even
  • Why C# and Why .NET In The Undergraduate Information Systems Curriculum
  • Considering the rapid pace of changes in the software field and the limited courses that a student can take in languages, the question is which languages are crucial for students to learn in an undergraduate IS curriculum. This paper investigates the necessity of teaching C# and .NET in the undergraduate IS curriculum. It explores the pros and cons of .Net versus J2EE for applications development and differences between C#, C++ and Java, and which one may be the best language for teaching first programming course in IS curriculum. C# is Microsoft's latest object-oriented programming language developed for .NET platform and .NET is Microsoft’s latest platform technology for creating web services. C# is a C++ based language and was developed to provide portability for distributed applications over network and internet. Application development in .NET platform can be done in multiple languages including C#, C++, and Visual Basic. Programs developed in all of these languages are compiled to Microsoft’s Intermediate Language (IL) and executed within Common Language Runtime (CLR). We explain the core elements of .NET and how web applications are developed and run with this technology. .NET is not a programming language; it's a virtual-machine technology (similar to Java virtual machine technology) with a framework that provides capability to run a variety of web applications. The .NET framework class library provides a set of classes that provide essential functionality for applications build within the .NET environment. Web functionality, XML support, database support, threading and distributed computing support is provided by the .NET framework

  • Programming Guide for Linux USB Device Drivers
  • The development of the Linux USB subsystem started in 1997 and in the meantime it was redesigned many times. This implied various changes of its internal structure and its API too. So it is even hard for experienced device driver developers to keep up to date with all ongoing discussions and current changes. This document should give detailed information about the current state of the USB subsystem and its API for USB device drivers. The first section will deal with the basics of USB devices. You will learn about different types of devices and their properties. Going into detail you will see how USB devices communicate on the bus. The second section gives an overview of the Linux USB subsystem [2] and the device driver framework. Then the API and its data structures will be explained step by step. The last section of this document contains a reference of all API calls and their return codes. The Universal Serial Bus In 1994 an alliance of four industrial partners (Compaq, Intel, Microsoft and NEC) started to specify the Universal Serial Bus (USB). The bus was originally designed with these intentions: - Connection of the PC to the telephone - Ease-of-use - Port expansion The specification (version 1.0) was first released in january 1996 and the latest official version 1.1 was released in september 1998 [4]. The document is still under development and a version 2.0 was announced in 1999. More information and all specification papers can be found in [1]. The USB is strictly hierarchical and it is

  • Life Forms & 3D Studio Max User Guide
  • Life Forms only animates segmented models. When you build a model that will be animated, consider how it is going to move. This helps you to determine how many segments the models should have and where the pivot points of each segment should be. There are no restrictions to the model’s zero-angle position ( the position where all joints have no rotation values. ) Life Forms can animate and apply motion to models with any zero-angle positions. However, when building a segmented model ensure that: • joint names are unique. • joint names have no spaces or special characters. • the polygon count for the model is less than 10,000. • the model is a reasonable size. Model height of 1 - 5 meters is recommended. Props must be no larger than 50 m by 50 m.. Tip: if your model is very detailed, create a lower resolution. You can animate the low resolution model and apply the motion to the high resolution model before rendering. Note, however, that the low and high resolution modelsmust beidentical except for the resolution. Download pdf Life Forms & 3D Studio Max User Guide
