Modeled after C++, the Java language was designed to be small, simple, and portable across platforms and operating systems, both at the source and at the binary level (more about this later). Java is often mentioned in the same breath as HotJava, a World Wide Web browser from Sun like Netscape or Mosaic (see Figure 1.1). What makes HotJava different from most other browsers is that, in addition to all its basic Web features, it can also download and play applets on the reader’s system.
Applets appear in a Web page much in the same way as images do, but unlike images, applets are dynamic and interactive. Applets can be used to create animations, figures, or areas that can respond to input from the reader, games, or other interactive effects on the same Web pages among the text and graphics. Although HotJava was the first World Wide Web browser to be able to play Java applets, Java support is rapidly becoming available in other browsers. Netscape 2.0 provides support for Java applets, and other browser developers have also announced support for Java in forthcoming products.

Installing the Component
It is recommended that you make a backup of your database structure before installing the 4D Ajax Framework component.
1 Open your 4D database with 4D Insider
2 In the menu bar select Components -> Install/Update...
3 In the resulting dialog select the 4D Ajax Framework component (.4CP file) found in the installer’s “For 4D 2004” folder and click the Open button.
4 When installation completes quit 4D Insider.
Installing the Plugins Folder
4D Ajax Framework makes use of the 4D Pack plugin when serving its web pages. If you already have a “Plugins” folder next to your structure, simply copy the 4D Pack plugin into this folder. If you do not currently have a “Plugins” folder next to your structure, create this folder and copy the 4D Pack plugin into it.

Included with the 4D Ajax Framework component is a folder “Webfolder” that contains all of the HTML and JavaScript pages, which are used to serve your database to a web browser. A commonly accepted top level ontology for user and context models is of great importance for the user modeling and context research community. This ontology should be represented in a modern semantic web language like OWL and thus be available for all user-adaptive systems at the same time via internet. The major advantage would be the simplification for exchanging user model and context data between different user-adaptive systems.
However, the current trends of web 2.0 and social computing tell us that the users like to create their own tag spaces, naming conventions and taxonomies. The masses of tagging, rating and even blogging define a kind of ”wisdom of the crowds”. Now the question arises how this new bottom-up approach can be combined with the more top-down approach of ontology engineering.
