Over the last 10 years, the XML standard has been adopted across a wide range of environments in the IT industry. Microsoft is one of many companies that is re-aligning its existing product range to take advantage of the flexibility of XML. One of its current initiatives is the standardization of the Office Open XML File Formats (‘File Formats’).This paper reviews the standardisation process that Microsoft has embarked upon and examines Microsoft’s legal arrangements related to intellectual property associated with the File Formats and the manner in which that legal treatment interacts with other products currently on the market.
This paper seeks to address and we hope to clarify any misunderstandings that may exist in the industry, among policymakers and the wider general public, about both the standardisation process and the legal arrangements governing implementation of the File Formats by others.
Overview of Office Open XML File Formats
For a number of years, the software and IT industry has been moving increasingly from proprietary systems and formats towards ‘open’ standards. In the business applications software market, there are moves to establish ‘open’ file formats of various office applications, including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation products, in order to enable users to easily transfer their documents and data between different applications and to ensure that if their applications cease to be supported in the future that they canDLM4100 Compact Dial-Up Modem Users ManualThe DLM4100 is a compact dial-up modem designed and manufactured to operate in full industrial applications. Get PDFZimbra Connector for Apple iSyncWhen the Connector for Apple® iSync is installed, you can use Apple Address Book, iCal, and Microsoft® Entourage® to access the Zimbra Collaboration Suite server and synchronize data to and from the Mac.
The Connector for Apple iSync supports Entourage only from Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac, version 11.2.3. This is the first version of Microsoft Office for Mac in which Entourage supports Mac Sync Services, the same service used by the iCal and Address Book applications for data synchronization.
The ZCS Connector for Apple iSync plug-in uses the standard Apple package installer. It takes only a few minutes for users to install the Connector for Apple iSync on their computers, establish the connections to the Zimbra server and set up a synchronization schedule.
Before you begin
The Zimbra Connector for Apple iSync works on Apple computers running OS X 10.4.1 or later. Note: Recommended OS is 10.4.6 or later. Before you synchronize your calendars and address books, you should backup your Apple’s iCal and Address book data. If synchronization should fail, you can use these files to restore your Mac information.
• To back up Apple iCal, open iCal and select File>Back up Database.
• To back up the address book, open Address Book and select File> Back up Address Book.
Steps to configure the Connector for Apple iSync
Zimbra Connector for Apple iSync is configured from System Preferences.
1. After the Connector for Apple iSync is installed, open System
Preferences; click Zimbra from the Other row. The Zimbra dialog opens.

The CA/Browser Forum, a consortium of Certificate Authorities (CAs) and browser providers including VeriSign and Microsoft, recently created a new class of Web site identity authentication — the Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificate standard. EV SSL Certificates require Web sites to pass a stricter identity verification process than required by traditional SSL Certificates. These new certificates also trigger a more noticeable secure user interface in the latest high-security browsers for visitors to Web sites with an EV SSL Certificate. The address bar in Microsoft IE7 turns a highly visible green color to immediately signal the presence of identity information. A field on the right of the address bar toggles between the name of the Web site organisation and the issuing CA, such as VeriSign.
The combination of rigorous vetting and the highly visible “green bar” interface should inspire a higher level of consumer confidence in the trustworthiness of a Web site — confidence that has eroded over time due to the dramatic increase in phishing attacks. Web sites with EV SSL Certificates are expected to see an increase in the number of transactions completed by consumers as a direct result of this increased level of confidence.
• Increases consumer confidence and trust
• Higher online transaction completion rate
• Competitive advantage versus sites without EV
• Strong defense against phishing attacks
Features
• Very visible “green bar” interface immediately identifies your site
• Security status bar displays your organisation name and your trusted CA
• Highest industry standard for identity authentication

This incarnation of the world wide web holds transformational potential for teachers and students alike (RICHARDSON, 2006). Mashups, mixes and aggregations of digital artefacts form the basis for a dynamic and creative emerging environment within which students can learn through collaborative working and community based enquiry. Feed burning software enables users to receive alerts of web page updates direct to their desktop computers or mobile devices. The popularity of these applications is rising rapidly, as students see the opportunities to free up time and space so that learning can be fitted into busy lifestyles.
However, a dilemma has arisen. Although, by its very nature, social software attracts activities which have democracy and freedom from institutional influence at their heart (RICHARDSON, 2006), such freedom may have the effect of opening the door to abuse or misuse of technologies. Seemingly destructive elements may emerge where the right to participate is exploited. Institutional rules may be infringed, causing a detrimental effect upon the traditional organisation through subversion of previously accepted practices. In this paper we explore the creative and destructive
Autonomous learning
Students using Wikis and ‘blogs generally work autonomously and independently, beyond the reach of any recognised authority, so it is debatable to what extent educational institutions can, and should attempt to ‘manage’ such learning technology. It follows that some universities may see a need to control the
